During the Trial of Seven, Dunk fought through pain and fever; but when he found himself one-on-one with Aerion, he knew the prince had caught his scent. It distracted the young dragon long enough for Dunk to land the blow that made him yield. The victory tasted bitter and dishonest, though, and there was no way for Dunk to explain himself without bringing worse trouble on his own head. He needs to leave.
And just as he means to, the wind brings him the smell of tar, smoke, and blood.

In his drunken state, the thought weighed heavily on him. He hadn’t seen Shane since practice yesterday, but more importantly, he hadn’t seen Shane in months. They ignored each other in the locker room, were tense on the ice, and only interacted when Coach Wiebe made them. They had gotten into an awkward, mechanical rhythm since September, when they had to start this game of pretend.
Ilya shut his eyes for a moment, leaning against the wall in the den to steady himself. Obviously, he wouldn’t show up, Ilya thought, tilting his head back. Why would he?
There was no answer that he could give that made sense. Shane hadn’t spoken to Ilya unless necessary since June, and even before that, Shane had never wanted to be a partygoer.

Summary
Ilya and Shane marry after Rookie season
Due to Shane being a little more aware of himself thanks to Yuna, over-prepared mamma bear, explaining all types of sex/attraction to him from a young age (“He needs to be prepared for anything! I am not pigeonholing my son!”), Shane knows he’s crushing on, if not falling for, Ilya.
The butterfly effect occurs; this has only one outcome really. It’s a small thing. Tiny. When Ilya is not there for Shane’s Rookie of the Year award after-party, Shane is worried, needing to track down the other man, instead of slightly annoyed/upset that he would be without Yuna’s lessons.
This in turn leads him to not doing shots with Scott Hunter.
Which means only one thing: other than the whole ‘definitely being aware of falling for your rival’ tiny thing. It shouldn’t change much.
He is not drunk on that balcony with Ilya.

Fresh off of several stacked events to fit them into a weekend–because Shane’s mom is nothing if not efficient when it comes to the deals she makes–Ilya got home only a few minutes ago, still in the outfit he’d left his Buzzfeed puppy interview in, which Anya had clearly not appreciated, sniffing him suspiciously after her initial excited greeting and then retreating to Shane immediately when he patted his thigh in welcome.
Shane is trying not to be obviously enjoying Ilya’s turmoil as much as he is, shifting Anya to lay on her back like a baby in one arm and cooing at her.
“I know, huh? Papa left and played with who knows how many other dogs, and the whole time you were here missing him. I bet he wasn’t even thinking about you, huh?”
“Hollander!” Ilya says, sounding scandalized. “Do not tell her that! Is not true!”

Ilya’s mouth is on his in an instant, gnashing and devouring, tasting like shitty beer and Zyn packets. He’s always tasted disgusting, ever since freshman year when they hooked up in the dorms during rush week. He tasted like cigarettes then. Then, sophomore year, he tasted like vape smoke, until he decided vapes were far less sexy than cigarettes and quit. Only to taste like nicotine gum in junior year.
Shane hates that he knows all this. And he hates that it never stopped him from coming back.
January, Senior Year. It’s the night of Beta Omicron Sigma’s famous Snow Ball party. The president of their rival frat, Mu Tau Lambda, wouldn’t be caught dead there. Except for the fact that he’s been fucking the Beta Sig president since freshman year.
