Summary
King Nikolai was not the one who came up with the name, first of all.
He’s just doing what Zoya told him would be a smart move, and he’s using her example of a title for the position for it. It’s fairly self-explanatory that way, at least.
He’s reviewing the next candidate’s resume before he interviews them. They’ve all already gone through the preliminary steps with other high level court members as interviewers, so there shouldn’t be any surprises for Nikolai to have to deal with in his quest to hire an Integrity, Transparency, and Anti-Corruption Officer.
Well, he sure thinks that through the first four prospective employees.
Then he gets to the resume at the bottom of the stack. He reads the name at the top.
And oh no.
Oh no.
Oh, fuck.
That cannot right.Or,
Nikolai is hiring for a new position in his court. Kaz is a little shit about it, and he has immense fun being that way, too.

Summary
In which circumstances conspire to push Nikolai and Kaz closer than ever. AKA a fake dating crack-fic that got extremely out of hand, but has been my baby for most of a year. Book canon, post-RoW. Is it OOC? In some ways, yes, very. In other ways, I understand these characters as well as Leigh herself and that is reflected in their dynamics in the fic. Written for and with my partner.

Zoya lifted her head and cocked an eyebrow. “And you’re okay letting Kaz and Nikolai play at romance? Together?”
“It would not be the strangest role Kaz has played for a job, your majesty. And, as Nikolai pointed out, it would shift almost all press attention to them.”
“It would also,” Mila said through a bite of waffle, “be fucking hilarious.”
A smile fought its way onto Inej’s face. “That’s an added bonus, as well, yes.”
Zoya threw her hands up. “I guess!”

Kaz took him in as he opened the door. “I take it this is about the assassin?”
“The- what?” Nikolai blinked. “How did you…?”
Kaz pulled him into the room. It was empty but for the two of them. Kaz gestured to a chair against the wall, and pulled up a second to face it.
“Part of my job is knowing who comes in and out of Fifth Harbour,” Kaz said. “Yesterday, a Fjerdan showed up on a ship out of Ravka, got drunk, and spent half the night telling anyone who would listen about the dragon queen of Ravka nearly biting his head off.”
Nikolai snorted.
“Seemed a bit far-fetched,” Kaz said, “but here you are.”
