Sahar, Charlie, and Tao entered the rehearsal space while Nick was in conversation with his lighting designer so they had already begun setting up by the time Nick was able to greet them. He wrapped Sahar in a massive hug, his nerves subsiding a bit knowing he had one of his best friends with him. When he turned to face his new drummer and keys player, everything seemed to blur.
One of them was tall and lanky, dark hair poking out of a red beanie. And next to him, was the most gorgeous person Nick had ever seen. He was lanky in a way that looked lithe and graceful with a mess of dark curls, shining blue eyes, and the barest hint of stubble gracing his perfect jawline.
Or, Nick is kind of a rockstar and kind of in love with his drummer.

“Look, if a guy is going to have arms like that and wear a vest at the gym right in my line of sight, I have to look a little. It’s my duty as a touch-starved gay nerd.” He shrugged, hoping his blush wasn’t too evident among the sea of pink.

All too soon, the final model stepped out. The outfit was probably incredible, the crowd’s reaction indicating as much. But all Nick could focus on was the model himself.
He was tall, seemingly close to Nick’s height, but where Nick was rounded muscle and soft angles, this man was lithe lines and sharp edges. Nick thought of an elf or a pixie, something so close to human but just more. His dark curls were styled to bounce as he walked, threatening to fall into his blue-grey eyes. There was a grace to him; he almost glided down the runway, his feet seeming to coast along the floor with an ethereal ease.
Or, Nick was a rugby player, Charlie was a model, can I make it anymore obvious?

Charlie had become almost mythical to him. The only times Charlie was free to hang out with Tara and Darcy was when Nick was otherwise engaged. He had to go home for his mum’s birthday, he had a date (which never ended well), he got food poisoning. Nick began to wonder if Charlie actually existed.
Except he knew Charlie existed because he’d seen photos. He would never admit it to his friends, but the first time he saw Charlie, he had to take a minute to reboot. It was a blurry selfie on Darcy’s instagram story, her and Charlie clearly drunk on a night out. Nick had been holed up with the flu, living vicariously through his friends’ photos, when he saw it.
Or, Nick finally meets Charlie at Tara and Darcy's bachelorette party and the stars do, in fact, align.

He took a deep breath and knocked. There was some shuffling behind the door and a muffled voice that Nick couldn’t make out. Oh god, hopefully he hadn’t caught them at a compromising time.
But then, the handle turned, and he raised his hands to catch the ball. The door opened just as the rugby ball sailed into his arms, and he turned, ready to say his cheesy line.
Instead, he forgot how to use words entirely. The person at the door wasn’t Tara or Darcy. No, this was someone else, someone Nick had never seen before; of that he was sure because he would not have forgotten this person. He would never be able to stop thinking about this person had he already been aware of his existence.
Or, Nick's uni rugby team does that weird TikTok thing, and someone special answers the door.
