The cement dug harshly into his knees when they buckled under him and he fell to the ground at Sam’s side, hands fluttering uselessly beside him, unsure suddenly what he should do. His mouth was moving, yelling for help, for someone, anyone, as Sam’s eyes started to slip shut, and Josh grabbed hold of him so he wouldn’t hit the ground. The first time they notice one of Richard’s little quirks, as they call them, it comes in the form of a sticker, of all things.
A little, glittery, star-shaped sticker.
It’s tiny, maybe the size of a fingernail at most. And it’s a gift– a prize for doing well during his very first physio session. “You’ve earned it.” The therapist had told him as she stuck it onto his hand, discreetly smoothing the material down where it was already beginning to crumple cheaply at the edges, “The better you do, the cooler the stickers’ll be. How does that sound?”
Richard hadn’t responded for a few moments. His eyes, and clearly his mind, were entirely focused on the little sticker pressed against his skin. They watched as he studied it, bringing his hand up close to his face like he was analysing some sort of space artefact, rather than a sticker of all things.
Then the light caught the sticker, and its glittery surface shimmered.
And Richard had beamed.
