Bucky glances up at Sam through his eyelashes. His look is soft and a little wistful, and it abruptly explains everything from the past two years. Simmering just below the surface of this look is the reason why someone like Steve would drop the shield for Bucky not once but twice, and would make that same decision over and over again if he had to.
It’s not like Sam didn’t get it before. He did. Of course he did. He’d have given everything up for Riley, would still give all of this up in a heartbeat if it meant having Riley back in his life, now more than ever. He got it before, all right.
It’s just that now he understands.

Bucky swallows. “Took him long enough,” he says, keeping his tone light. He bumps their shoulders together for good measure. “You should go for it.”
“You really think so?” Sam asks, looking at him.
“Yeah, man,” Bucky says. He fixes his gaze on Torres, high up in the sky, sunlight glinting off his wings. It hurts Bucky’s eyes. He blinks, rapidly. “You should be with somebody who can make you happy.”

“I’m not sharing my room,” Sam mutters, knowing as he says it that it sounds exactly like he’s a fucking ten year old facing a new sibling. Steve hastily makes what Sam thinks is supposed to be an understanding face.
“Of course not,” he says soothingly. “He can bunk in with me, it’s not like we haven’t done it before. It's a twin room, anyway, there's already a spare bed.”
Sam guesses a bigger house is out of the question. Whatever; the three of them have spent eight hours crammed in a Mini, it can’t be that bad.
It’s not that bad. It’s worse.

Anyway, Bucky’s great with colds. And the flu, and stomach bugs, and he’s actually pretty good with rheumatic fever too. Not so much with pneumonia, but you can’t really hold that against him.”
Sam decides not to ask. “I don’t think I have pneumonia.”
(Sam falls sick right when Steve needs to go out Avenging. Luckily, Bucky, who's less than a year free from being the Winter Soldier and mostly spends his days prowling around the house, is around to take care of him.)

(The blood goes all the way around, like it’s not only from Driver’s injury. Lars pretends not to notice.) It’s ripped, next to the zipper, from the knife that was in his stomach. Lars doesn’t think Driver should wear a bloody jacket.
Driver shakes his head, eyeing Lars warily.

Hedonist that he is, Lestat has never particularly cared to be held to the constraints of a schedule. Louis may enjoy the routine and predictability of something as prosaic as the requirements of managing a business–one of his many little idiosyncrasies that Lestat simultaneously enjoys and is frequently irritated by–but for him? Non. He can enjoy the artistry of a well-planned ball or the satisfaction of a business deal well-struck, but he’s always enjoyed the freedom of not quite knowing what’s coming next. In a long, long life, it’s far too easy to fall into a rut and find oneself constrained to it for decades before noticing.
Even with his taste for surprise, however, Louis holding out a tiny, sooty, sniffling child is a shock he is not best pleased by.
He flicks his eyes up from the big-eyed, dripping moppet, raising a brow and feeling his lip curl slightly in distaste. The child reeks of smoke and fear and God only knows what else.
“Put it back,” he says flatly.
