Summary
Izzy is a monk on an island whose society relies on Kraken protection and treats them as gods. The island's religion centers on them, especially their breeding ritual, in which one monk or nun is selected to be their Vessel. Those who survive the process experience visions under the Krakens' mind-altering aphrodisiacs, and are elevated in the society as high priests/priestesses.
It is the greatest honor of Izzy's life to be chosen.

Summary
John Irving’s brothers and friends make increasingly ribald insinuations as his wedding gets nearer with each passing day, but John’s not particularly looking forward to the wedding night himself. He’s of the strongly-held conviction that lust is a sin even inside the bonds of holy matrimony and considers himself pious for not feeling similarly. A perfect wedding night would be him giving his bride a kiss on the cheek and sending her off to bed. Maybe they could pray together. It was unseemly to think he’d trespass on her person so quickly.
And that was how things passed in the pleasant weather of early spring until two weeks before he was due to be married— when John’s brothers tossed a sack over his head and dragged him to a brothel.
A story where John Irving and Solomon Tozer meet under very different circumstances.

Another appendage wraps around him, this one slimy and wet. Ed shudders. They’re not exactly tentacles, Izzy explained to him once, but Ed never really got the difference, and there’s no other word he can think of to describe them, anyway. Izzy wraps it around Ed’s thigh, and Ed spreads his legs, beckoning Izzy in.

Suddenly, John is afraid of what will happen to him if Captain Edward Little finds out A. that he's a bird hybrid and B. (and, according to John's mind, considerably worse) that he's trans. As if lusting for Edward during this whole complication wasn't enough, John finds George Hodgson—the only other man who knows that he's a bird (but not trans)—watching him the entire meeting.
