    Bookmarker's Notes

"I have been chosen," Joseph says firmly, instead of answering, measuring the words out carefully. He says it again, then a third time. Then he simply sighs and reaches out, takes Rook's hand in his own, smiles at nothing at all.
Rook's not really a fan of that, they are not hand-holding friends.
    ---
Joseph's watching him, an oddly focused expression on his face. It's a look that has intent behind it.
    "What?" Rook asks.
"I would have you come to worship again," Joseph tells him, in what is in no way a conversational tone.
Rook blinks and for a second he has no idea how to react. Because that does not sound even a little bit like Joseph is referencing religious services. Jesus, did that happen? Rook feels like that's the sort of thing that could have happened. It's a possibility. Rook likes being touched, and Joseph touches people a lot, even without help from mind-altering plants.
    ---
"Bless you," she says. "May the Father bless you."
    Yes. Of course. The Father.
Speaking of Joseph - Rook has officially lost Joseph.
    "Fuck."
He panics for a second, until he hears the slow wash of the river twenty feet from the road. Rook follows the noise, and finds Joseph all the way down the slope, standing waist deep in the flow, arms stretched out to the side and streaming water, like he's waiting to be picked up by some giant bird.
    "Damn it, Joseph."
    ---
Driving while soaking wet is not enjoyable. But Rook has no other clothes, and it's hard enough to find even one outfit that fits him. He's probably going to get some sort of horrible rotting disease. Some crotch-based rotting disease and it is entirely Joseph Seed's fault.
Joseph is all soft contentment on the seat beside him, humming quietly like he's just had a religious experience. Which is sort of true, though mostly at Rook's expense, Rook's wet, miserable expense.
    ---
People seem far more inclined to listen to him once they spot Joseph - and weirdly that includes the non-believers too. Of course, Joseph has to get out of the car and touch absolutely everybody, like he has to bless them all personally or something. No matter how many times Rook tells him not to. Rook ends up resigned to making him stop once it's gone on long enough to become uncomfortable.
    ---
Rook looks at Joseph, who, surprisingly, doesn't seem that bothered to find half his congregation fucking in church. Rook thinks there's probably a rule against that, no matter how permissive your church is.
"I'm pretty sure this is a whole other sort of cult," Rook mutters to himself. He's never in his entire life tried to break up an orgy. He's not sure exactly how you go about it. He doesn't want to just start pulling people apart. They didn't cover this in training, and he'd never imagined he would have been annoyed about that oversight.
    ---
Rook finds someone else, makes them get a jug and fill water from one of the faucets. He hopes it's drinkable, because there doesn't seem to be another source that isn't the river - he hopes people haven't been drinking out of the river. He saw a documentary once about waterborne parasitic diseases, and it stuck with him in a way he's never been entirely happy about.
    ---
Pastor Jerome catches sight of Joseph and waves the bible he's holding at him. Rook kind of hopes there isn't a gun in this one. He really doesn't want to have to knock him out.
He weaves in their direction, arms outstretched as if he means to gather them all up for services. Rook would like to avoid that if at all possible.
"Ah, I see you have brought the devil to our garden. Do you wish to change your ways, devil?" Pastor Jerome catches Joseph's arms and Rook wonders whether he should make that stop somehow. "I accept the challenge of teaching you all the ways you have become lost, of bringing you finally to the light."
Joseph looks so beautifully offended that Rook has to laugh. Which gets him a sharply betrayed look, before Joseph is forced to try and stop Jerome from aggressively blessing him. Rook hadn't even known you could bless someone aggressively, it's kind of fascinating to watch.
    ---
Rook wakes up far too hot, with Joseph Seed's arm curled round his waist, and John Seed snoring in his ear on the other side. Someone is tucked at the foot of the bed, a confusing weight on his ankles, and they are attempting to tickle him. He's pretty sure that one has to be Faith.
    ---
Rook drives them all North, even though John complains that he wants to do it. Rook refuses, because he's not going to let people under the influence of drugs drive. Even though John protests that he's done that 'literally dozens of times.' Rook's going to pretend that he didn't hear any of that. He's been ignoring a lot of things he would probably have written down and tried to arrest people for a month ago.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Rook wants to make some sort of amends with John, just not at the cost of engaging Jacob in conversation. Easily his least favorite Seed with his horror show music box, his nightmare murder maze, and his contrarily pleasant speaking voice.
    ---
“Anyone ever tell you that you inspire confidence? Because they were lying,” Rook hisses.

“Don’t worry,” Jacob says. “If anything happens to you John will burn that prison to the ground and kill everyone inside.”

Rook’s mouth works open and closed a few times, struggling to find the right words. “Now I’m more worried.”

    “Yeah.”

“This is fun for you, isn’t it.”

    “Yep.”
    -----
His judgment is pretty well compromised at this point, along with his ability to fight the Seeds. He also has at least partial ownership of Jacob’s dog and how could anyone expect him to fight his co-parent? Rook is in way too deep.
    -----
Rook scritches at her ears and this time she lets him, firmly pressing her head into his hands. “What a pretty and vicious baby you are,” he coos. He’s aware that this judge could eviscerate him with little trouble, but Jacob looks so disgruntled when he acts like she’s a pet that it honestly brightens his day more than throwing molotovs at a Peggie. “What about Pumpkin? You wanna be called Pumpkin?”

    “No,” Jacob says.

    “Cupcake?”

    “No.”
    -----
The other Peggie looks from Rook, to Jacob, and then to Joseph. “Am I… am I supposed to kill him?”

Jacob snorts in a way that could absolutely be taken as a yes by the wrong Peggie.

    Fucking jerk.

Rook puts his hands on one Peggie’s bearded face and forces him to to meet his eyes. “Do you feel anything?”

“Uncomfortable?” The Peggie looks around at all the Seeds. “Please make him stop.”

    Bookmarker's Notes

Rook watches from a sheltered, rocky spot when they find a small, abandoned house with a working truck, start helping themselves to anything they can use, talking about how the whole world will be theirs after the Collapse. They stay there past lunchtime, which isn't technically patrolling. Bad cultists, sloth tattoos for all of them.
    ---
Rook spends an entire day setting traps all around the guard post that Michael's team has been left at. He has a lot of traps, and he divides the explosives into neat little piles, just big enough to cause someone an unpleasant inconvenience. If losing some fingers counts as an inconvenience. Rook supposes in the normal world it would probably be a bit more than that.
    ...
It's getting harder to judge acceptable behaviour since Joseph escalated everything, and effectively turned Rook into some sort of strange mercenary for liberation, one that doesn't get any wages, or bonuses, or really perks of any kind, unless you count all the random skills he's learning in the woods. None of which Rook suspects he'll be able to tell anyone about without sounding like a serial killer, or use in any official capacity.
    ---
There are rumours though. Rook has been listening to all of them.

They range from vaguely believable to wildly outlandish, and Rook kind of likes those ones the best. 'Michael saw him turning into a werebear,' 'Michael barely escaped when he discovered Rook completely naked, practicing Black Magic in the woods,' 'Michael saw him be brought back from the dead by Pastor Jerome,' 'Michael is the only one immune to Rook's mind-control powers.'
    ...
Some of the Peggies have a surprising amount of imagination, for people who're willing to blindly follow an obviously crazy man into an underground bunker for seven years, without questioning any of the logistics.
    ---
"You shot Michael," Rook says and he has no idea why he sounds so annoyed about that. But he'd had plans, he'd had ideas, he'd been intending to make the man's life miserable. And now he's dead.

John takes a breath, levels a look at him, as if he thinks Rook is being an idiot on purpose.

"Yes, and now I have to go and repent, obviously, since I'm about to lie about you brutally murdering a man in my house." John moves back far enough to jab at Michael with a boot, as if to make sure he's dead.

"I didn't murder anyone," Rook says, because the body is literally right there, and John is holding the gun that did it.

    Summary

If there’s one word Kaveh could use to describe his life, it would be “ordinary”. Sure, the start of his life looks more like a sad drama movie with the death of his father, being abandoned by his mother, then being treated like luggage as he was passed from one relative to another. But he grew up, got a job working as a corporate slave, and became self-sufficient enough to pay his rent while not starving. Currently, his job is tedious, and the only joy in his life comes from spending his evenings at home alone, designing and building little houses in the game "My Little Aranara Friend", but things could be worse!

It becomes worse in the blink of an eye. He dies. And not only is he forcefully transported into the world of "My Little Aranara Friend", but he's also stuck in the body of a mob monster called a Fungus where his only hope of getting a human body is by levelling up.

...And also by saving the Aranara from mass extinction caused by some malevolent mysterious dark power called "The Withering" that, if left unchecked, will also destroy the world.

    Fuck his life.

So sweet! And I'm so very curious about the plot!! Even more so after actually finishing Sumeru's Archom Quest, and the desert world quests.
    ---
Princesses tend to also be pretty, Kaveh points out. Also, they are not a Fungus.

“A Fungus can be a princess!” Alhaitham argues, his face pinked. “And I think you are really pretty! I-I like your flower patterns and that blue spot on your mushroom cap! It looks really neat like—like a feather from a Dusk Bird!”

The image of a toucan-looking creature comes to mind with its derpy-looking eyes, its goofy fat beak, and its rotund body. There are a lot of different ways Kaveh will describe this animal and attractive is not one of them.
    ---
Tighnari launches into a mini explanation about different species of animals adapting to new environmental stress with great gusto while Cyno and Alhaitham listen in rapt attention. Kaveh is left staring at the scene.

This is truly a group of introverted nerd-ass STEM kids with high IQ but low EQ points. Alhaitham with his no-nonsense attitude and blunt words fits right in.

    Summary

It hurt his head to think about what he was doing prior to… this, but he was fairly certain he’d gone to bed. Like any normal day. He’d returned from his routine shift at the Fatui headquarters and gone back to his studio apartment to sleep. The first thing his slightly dumbfound mind managed to conjure up was that he’d been isekai’d, but it was thought with a mental laugh and a ‘yeah, sure’ followed right after.
Meaning the only feasible conclusion was that he was still asleep, and this was all a dream.

    Bookmarker's Notes

It sounded to Ajax as though dragons had to take the elements as a part of themselves, kind of like slimes. Although it felt slightly sacreligious to compare dragons to slimes,
    ---
“Yes, but Havria cashed in an old favor and requested our aid back then,” Guizhong explained, serene. “Dai had been bothering her borders with increasing intensity, and was threatening her people. So, Morax and I went to deal with him.”

“No, I went to deal with him while you had tea with Havria,” the god corrected, unfazed.

    “Same thing,” Guizhong mused.
    ---
Guizhong felt like she should no longer be surprised, yet she still was.

Childe was flying. With Hydro. Not with Anemo, the element that was meant to make one fly.

Hydro. The element that wasn’t meant to make people fly.

Or, at least, wasn’t supposed to. Because, apparently, it could. Somehow.

Either that, or Childe was just different. Which, at this point, Guizhong was very much willing to accept as fact.
    ---
“One can see the reasoning. Do not worry, this is no trouble. One would be honored to assist Master Childe in this mission,” Trail Clearer nodded as well, one hand on her chest. She then turned and settled a look on Zhihao and Xinyi. “One can only hope these raskals will behave themselves while on duty.”

“What? Of course we will!” Zhihao pouted. Ajax had the suspicion they wouldn’t, actually.
    ---
And hanging over the void, their light peeking through the flowers and rocks from time to time, were the stars. As though they were underground. Like-

Like some sort of… root vegetable…

Why were they called fruits then?! Ajax kind of wanted to scream.
    ---
“That much is true,” Rex Lapis hummed, pondering. Ajax tried not to preen at that, his mind latching on to the smallest of crumbs like a half-brained pigeon. Gods, Pulcinella was right: his’ was just a self-perpetuating ego.
    ---
Briefly, his brain wondered if Morax could use that tail like a kangaroo. If Ajax should worry about the god springing up and kicking him with both feet to the solar plexus. It was a funny image, but mildly terrifying at the same time.
    ---
“If you stayed, you’d get to see Pantalone’s kids,” Arlecchino mused, joking, giving him a thumbs-up as the hug slowly dissolved now that he’d left. Ajax groaned in annoyance again.

“What kids?” the supposed Pantalone demanded, also annoyed.
    ...
Pantalone threw up his hands in frustration and turned to walk away as the others snickered.
