A week and a half ago, Jay stumbled on an opportunity to write a spec score for the new Madagascar movie. A week and a half ago, he locked in on the knowledge he could actually, really, just be Jay, and not Matt & Jay. So a week ago, Jay was trying to figure out a way to let Matt down easy, un-embed him from his flesh a bit, loosen the grip of Matt’s teeth on his calf enough that they could just be normal friends, who hang out, and aren’t embroiled in a bizarre psychodrama together, so Matt doesn’t think they’re more than they are, that Jay feels the same intense way he does, that they’re going to get buried together and have one headstone: Here Lies Jay McCarrol (1983-2065) and His Best Friend Forever, Matt Johnson (1985-2066), They Will Be Roommates In Heaven :D

They’re on the couch not watching a movie. Or, well, there’s a movie on, and Jay isn’t watching it. Matt might be, but every so often, Jay will look over at him and find him looking back, which makes him think that Matt isn’t watching, isn’t watching the TV, at least, but watching Jay.

There are no windows in the Skydome’s cramped detention room so nobody gets the moment that Jay’s nose starts bleeding, dripping heavily into his lap. His hands are still cuffed behind his back. He tries to wipe the blood off on his shoulder and succeeds in smearing it across his lips, over his left cheek. It keeps dripping like a leaky faucet.

His heart was only hammering because he'd just been running for like fifteen minutes. Fifteen minutes is a long time for someone to run continuously.

“You know what? I don’t care.” Jay holds his hands up in a mocking shrug, laughing cynically. “I know I won fair and square, doesn’t matter how your little trick turned out. I know, and you—” he jabs a finger into Matt’s chest, “you know it, too.” Matt grabs at Jay’s hand before he can pull it back, not pushing it away or pulling it closer, just clutching it painfully tight with an indiscernible look in his eye.
“I know…” he starts slowly, drawing the sound out as long as he can, “that I won.”

For a second he'd wondered if everything else had been a dream. If he was finally waking up now, after all these years. That Never Come Down had never been a hit, that he'd never been famous at all. That it was him and Matt who were going on tour.
That was something they used to talk about. After booking the Rivoli, they'd tour Canada and the U.S. as Nirvanna the Band. A road trip adventure. Jay had such a clear image in his mind of Matt coming up with some crazy promotional stunt for them, something like jumping into the Grand Canyon.
“You with me, Bird?”
But no, that couldn't be right. Jay was the same Jay he'd always been. He was still in his Hawaiian shirt from the concert. He was in restraints.
“Did you—" He blinked at Matt in front of him. "You kidnapped me?”
Matt stood up, a little taken back. “How else would I be able to talk to you?"
God, they'd ended up in a Misery homage?On the first night of Canadian Rockstar Jay McCarrol’s world tour, the man disappears.

They stay on the roof until it’s dark, passing a bottle back and forth and sucking up the warm air until it runs cold. They turn through the book like it’s an ancient tome, touch their fingers against scribbled names in pencil until they smudge. Staining their fingers with something almost holy. Matt imagines a sort of sacred ritual: they cut their palms, press them flat to the pages, and then the sky opens up and angels sing their praises to the booking agents of venues all over town. Nirvana the Band will play the Rivoli, and here is the proof, written in blood, right next to Vince Valence’s chickenscratch.

Not only is Matt shifting constantly, be it adjusting the way he’s sitting, or wiggling his foot, or drumming his fingers on the arm of the couch, but he also keeps reaching for popcorn at the exact same time that Jay does, and if Matt knocks his hand out of the way one more fucking time he’s going to kill him.
“Dude,” Jay snaps. “Stop moving.”
“I’m not moving,” he insists, then adds, a little choked, “I’m just—I’m just watching, Bird.”
