Waking up naked on a bloody altar isn't the best introduction to a new place, but you make do with what life hands you. After a rocky start, Vera finds herself in Markarth, trying to make a new home for herself amidst the violence, corruption, and Thalmor zealotry. But just when things are finally settling down - as much as they can in the city of blood and silver - a Nord and a Dunmer roll into town with the mother of all bad deals. Always read the fine print.
This series starts about a year before the events of the game and will continue through the timeline and the DLCs. This fic is the first installment. Canon-compliant(ish), but skews towards a lot of original content. Narration is in 3rd person limited; the protagonist is not the Dragonborn.

Summary
The visions were nothing new to Byleth. She'd had them, off and on, since she was young. At best they seemed meaningless and at worst they were a source of confusion, but at least they were few and far between.
Yet in the spring of Imperial Year 1180, something changes. When familiar faces come to the monastery, Byleth is forced into the Officer's Academy by Lady Rhea, and the visions get more frequent -- and more disturbing.
Fire. Blood. War. Shards of scenes she can't quite put together into a whole, made all the more unsettling because she is starting to recognize the people and places in them. And glimpses of a strange young girl who only seems to be getting more and more frustrated with Byleth as time goes on.
A year in the Academy would've been hard enough if she were just dealing with Rhea's cryptic guidance, a professor with a bewildering amount of personal interest in her and a nosy house leader. But throw in life-threatening missions, demonic beasts, and shady plots from both outside and within the church she calls home?

But they’re all excuses, flimsy ones, for the real reason.

There was something in her gaze that made him feel seen; it was like she was shining an unholy light into the deepest recesses of his mind. Was that how changes of heart worked? He skimmed over his unexpectedly cracked facade with a pleasant chuckle, smoothing out the rough patches until they sparkled with their usual mirror finish. "Well, I must be going; my train should be arriving any moment! Speaking with you is always enlightening," he said, but wait, did he already say that? Shit. There was something else he meant to say, the whole reason he'd started this conversation in the first place, and that was, "If it's not any trouble, would we be able to speak again sometime?"
