Nate River is surrounded by guilt of his actions. The weight of being a murderer is pretty heavy to bear. His past... His obsession with Light, it's what really what scares him now. He's scared to accept his feelings of Mihael Keehl. Scared of what he could be.
So he runs away, from his feelings. Even if it means throwing his own life away into a self destructive life style. Feel free to skip right to chapter 4 for the college au part, the first three chapters are buildup.

Summary
At 16 years old was when Nate River began to truly believing in the Christmas spirit. Before last Christmas, every year was cold and lonely. Christmas comes only once a year, but last year something magical happened. Perhaps it was the mystic beauty of the white fluffy snow, or maybe it was the warmth of the fireplace. If he was told a year ago that he would enjoy Christmas he would roll his eyes and walk away in disbelief. Next Christmas he'll start preparing as soon as December first hits.

Summary
There's something missing here, and they both feel it hard. Light will openly taunt him, finding new ways to mock anything from his hair to his clothes to him being a cheap not-L, and Near will take it. Maybe offer a few barbs of his own. But their hearts aren't in it, not like they used to be. It's the routine of things; Near comes to forget about everything for a while and Light humours him for the sake of mental stimulation. He's a social creature, and it works out well for them both.
Two things can be true at once: Light lost, and Near is hopelessly, incredibly fucking bored.

When Light had threatened Near to either wash his hair properly or he’d do it himself, he did not expect him to actually follow through.
Sure, Light Yagami was one of the most childish and petty people Near knew, not to mention a man of his words. But he had also threatened to murder Near a few times and he was still alive. So, really, how was Near to know he was being serious?Or Light finally gives his meerkat of a boyfriend a proper wash.

The next night, he remembered a bit more. He remembered a hand reaching out to him, and a soft voice giving a message. The next night he was prepared, and every night after that he dreamed the same dream.
Light is stuck in a tower. Near comes to save him.
