Corel, 1992.
Dust chokes the streets for the second time in one summer, smothering the town from above and below. Dry plains dust drifting up, black coal dust bearing down. It's not the only thing making it hard to breathe.
Young Barret Wallace, a 19-year-old miner, has just witnessed four men lose their lives in an accident underground. As the pit managers brush off calls for meaningful change, justice seems like a mirage on the horizon. Meanwhile, his 11-year-old neighbour Jiori (Knife, Female) waits anxiously for her mother to return from Rocket Town. Between the lines of her family's letters, danger rumbles, as the situation in Wutai spells trouble for their independent outpost.
It won't be long before the streets of Corel become a powder keg all of their own.
A canon-compliant(?) backstory fic for two characters whose lives take very different paths away from a common place. A story about the ceilings that enclose us, the kind of wealth that matters, and the hope that lights fires.
