Summary
When Dean’s grief is loud enough to wake him in The Empty, the entity casts Castiel out, but not without a price. He comes to in a barn in Pontiac, Illinois, with no memory of who or what he is. With nothing but an initial on the back of a photograph, and his heart’s instinct telling him to head west, Castiel begins a journey of self-discovery.
Meanwhile, Dean is a broken shell. Rather than live under his brother and Eileen's pitying and concerned gaze, Dean decided it was time to move out of the bunker. With Jody’s help, Dean moves into a small lake house just outside of Sioux Falls, where he can mourn in peace and in his own time. Dean is determined to be better for Cas, even if it’s too little too late.
Little does Dean know that it is never too late, as the Cas in Dean’s dreams is doing everything he can, to find his way back home.- Language:

Summary
Cas had one hand curled over his stomach, one grinding against his forehead, and his eyes were darting everywhere. Dean couldn’t catch his gaze. “I n-need to find—I need to get—safe.”
“Let me help. It’s me, Cas. It’s me.”
Something in Cas’s expression calmed, for a moment, but then he looked like he was on the verge of tears. “It’s me, we’re family,” he said, eyes finally looking at Dean straight-on, intense.

When Dean nearly runs over an injured Castiel on the way back from meeting Metratron at the end of 08x21, it doesn't take long to realize something is seriously wrong with his friend. More than he'd realized, more than Cas can hide. He can't speak, can't stand, can't remember things. Dean will have to swallow the bitter feelings he's been harboring since the crypt and help him, or Cas might not make it through the night. But if he does pull through, maybe Dean will get another chance to make Cas understand what he's been trying to say.

Summary
Retirement was supposed to be peaceful, closing the book on Chuck and rewriting their own stories. Dean should've been happy. He'd always longed quietly for normalcy, for that picket fence life that never quite fit him.
Dean knows it's over now. No more monsters, no more apocalypses, no more loss. His mind just hasn't fully caught up. In his nightmares, he's still there. Never really free. Still trapped, and giving up.
There were some things Grace couldn't heal. Sometimes, it's the human things that are the most healing.

“What do you mean?” Claire asks. There’s something about the way he says he let this happen that squeezes at Claire’s heart. He may not look like it, but he’s just a little boy, only three years old. He shouldn’t feel responsible for the whole world, even if he does have God-like superpowers.

Summary
Time travel. That actually makes sense. It would also explain why his grace feels so weak, why his body aches so much. But Castiel can’t remember traveling through time. He wouldn’t do that without a reason, right?
The Winchesters are still looking at him, waiting for an answer.
“2008.”, Castiel answers and his eyes wander to Dean again, “September 2008.”
Dean draws in a sharp breath.
“Son of a bitch”, he hisses.
