Suddenly, Pony was sick all over the bed, coughing and gagging as the contents of his stomach emptied. Though he didn’t understand how there was even anything left to be emptied, considering he’d hardly eaten today.
Once Pony finished, he sagged back against his brother, who held onto him tightly. “S-Soda. Soda, I don’t feel good.”
Soda kissed the top of his brother’s head. “I know, baby, I know. It’s gonna be–” He stopped short, only now getting a good look at the sick on Pony’s bed. It was unlike anything Soda had ever seen. It was dark brown, and it almost looked like…coffee grounds? Soda knew for certain this wasn’t normal. Something was very, terribly wrong with his brother.
Or:
Ponyboy is worried about a test on Friday and Darry promises to help his little brother study. But it turns out he's more worried than anyone knew, worried enough to make himself severely sick. Darry's out with his friends when he finds out Pony is in the hospital, instead of at home - where they were supposed to be studying together.

Ponyboy shifted and wiggled until his back was snug to his big brother’s chest, head fitting perfectly under his chin. Soda leaned against the back of the couch, one arm hanging over and the other buried in Pony’s hair. It was too hot to be so close, a windless Oklahoma day, but no force of nature would keep those two apart if they could help it. Cicadas wailed outside the open windows, an empty sound that droned on.

“For when you get married. Sorry that there ain’t an engagement ring to go along, you’re on your own for that one.” Darry tried to joke, wanting to take the shocked sadness off of Soda’s face. “But I figured you should have their wedding bands, for when the time comes.”
“I can’t take these.”
Or Darry and Soda start wearing their parents' wedding rings to keep their memory alive.

Ironically, the apocalypse seemed to have favored the Greasers. Folks from their side of town had an advantage, because they always carried blades, wore practical clothes, and had been in their fair share of fights. Some of the rougher ones like Dally even carried heaters, which Darry was internally wishing for right about now.
Still, the barrier broke quickly. Soon, there were no Greasers or Socs, no rich or poor. There were only alive and dead.

"Mr. Curtis, I'm not sure how else to say this," she pauses a moment, tapping the pads of her fingers against the cluttered desk before letting out a long sigh, looking Darry right in the eyes. "We don't know where your brother is. No one does."
Darry feels his heart sink as he gripped the arms of the old wooden chair so hard it began creak. Sodapop puts his face in his hands in both anguish and frustration. Darry, who was currently feeling the exact same sorrow, reaches over, placing a strong hand on his brother's back, patting it gently.
After a few moments of tense silence, Darry stands from the chair, eyes hard and determined.
"Then I guess we better start looking."

After a heat of the moment decision, Darry finds himself locked up for a crime he did not intend to commit, forcing the last remnants of the Curtis family to part ways. Two years later, he and Soda attempt to pick up the pieces of their broken family as they search tirelessly for their missing brother.A brother they will soon come to not recognize.
