“Uh,” said Shane, “no, that’s not—”
Ilya grinned at him. It was a mean-edged grin but something about it seemed to suggest that he was joking with Shane, rather than about him. “Oh, he speaks.”
“We’re not here for an orgy,” Shane said to Jaw Man. “We’re missionaries with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.”

Holy fuuuuuckkkk this is everything uuuughhhhh this feels ancient and terrifying and perfect and it makes me feel a humming in my bones. Reading this feels like that time i woke up with a high fever and in a daze and instead of drinking water or taking medication found cato the elders recipe for globi circa 200 BCE and what it felt like tearing into those piping hot balls of fried dough and crying through fever tears while tasting flavours known by people of centuries past.
