Summary
The journey is long, my speeder bike’s engine coughing and sputtering its way across the dunes. There is something beautiful in the desert’s brutality, the kind of harsh landscape that has nothing to give its people but beauty, and I might have missed the little round hut were I not looking so carefully. It’s tucked away between the dunes and jagged rock formations, a dash of off-white against hues of red and orange.
As I approach I see two figures standing outside, one clad in worn but well-cared for clothes, a simple work shirt, pants, and thick-soled leather boots, the other in a roughspun cloak which was almost certainly intended to keep away the twin suns’ vicious rays. As soon as I’m close enough to pick out features, I know who the clone is.
Even in civilian clothing, distinctive white armor nowhere in sight, he stands proud and straight, his posture military-perfect. I’ve met no clones in my life, not personally at the very least, but I’ve seen their faces plastered everywhere. They are the Empire’s elite, more disciplined, more well-trained, stronger, faster, better than the stormtrooper recruits, though fewer and fewer in number as the years go by.

Kote’s eyes met Obi-Wan’s. He saw, in slow motion, what abject panic looked like on the Jedi’s face. He’d never seen that expression before. It felt intimate, a side that Cody had never been allowed to see. No one had.
Then, Obi-Wan relaxed into Kote’s grip on his cape, his head tilting minutely back against the wall. And he leaned, pressing his throat ever so gently towards the blade, his expression open and wondering and accepting.
“Cody…” he breathed, and he was smiling, crookedly and so wide that it must have hurt.
Kote could have pressed the blade all the way home in that moment.
