Summary
Rationally, he knew better than to react. He had spent years listening to insensitive comments. And most days, he wouldn’t have cared. He would have ignored her or told her she was being annoying and left. He had done it before. Putting any more effort into it wasn’t worth it. Later on, he would blame it on tiredness, on the looming obligation to keep waiting on that damned bridge with her, maybe just a little on the fact that it hurt more coming from someone who spent so long claiming to care, but in the moment, with his heart tightening in his chest and his hands tightening on the metal pipe until it almost bent, it came naturally.
