Bone deep but with a softer, warmer slant - the kind of tired that came from cozy winter nights talking over hot drinks, the quiet domesticity of working together with no need for conversation because silences were never awkward.
And with that realization came a second - Gen was his person.
Not because he was useful, or brilliant in all the ways Senku wasn’t, or because he seemed to always come back no matter what.
But because he chose Senku every single time. And Senku chose him in return.

Summary
Senku had always considered himself a rational person. Human attraction, in his opinion, had historically made people act deeply stupid. Wars fought over pretty faces. Songs written about someone’s eyelashes. Entire industries dedicated to romance.
Objectively absurd behavior.
Which was why, growing up, he had mostly assumed people exaggerated physical attraction out of social convention. Sure, people could look aesthetically pleasing. He understood symmetry. Proportions. Biology. But the way Taiju used to combust over Yuzuriha? Utterly incomprehensible.
Or so Senku had thought.
Then Gen happened.
And, apparently, the universe decided it was high time to humble him personally.

"Gen," Senku said, voice lower than usual. "Need to talk. Privately."
Gen raised an eyebrow, playful mask sliding into place automatically. "Oho? Senku-chan wants a secret meeting? Should I be flattered or scared~?"
"Look," Senku started, exhaling sharply. "Sapphire's... persistent. She's starting to interfere with work. Keeps showing up during critical experiments. Distracts the team. I need her to back off."
Gen tilted his head, amused. "So tell her you're not interested. You're good at being direct, Senku-chan."
"I did. Multiple times. She thinks it's 'tsundere' or some nonsense. Village girls hear too many old romance stories or something." Senku grimaced. "Science doesn't have time for this drama."
Gen chuckled. "Poor Senku-chan, the heartthrob of the stone world. What do you want me to do? Hypnotize her? Stage a dramatic rejection scene?"
Senku looked at him then—really looked. And there was something vulnerable in those eyes. Fear? Anxiety? It was so out of place on Senku's face that Gen's teasing died in his throat.
"No," Senku said quietly. "I need you to pretend to be my boyfriend."
"Excuse me?"

No one had ever said that to him before. Not without wanting something in return.
Of course his needy heart latched on. Of course it did. Senku was the first person who'd ever given him stability without strings. The first person who saw through his masks and liked what was underneath anyway. The first person who made the world feel a little less like a stage full of actors waiting to betray him.
He couldn't risk it. Couldn't risk ruining this—the one genuine thing in his life. Friendship with Senku was already more than he'd ever had. Love? Confessing love? That was asking the universe to laugh in his face again.

He had told himself what he felt for Senku was simply admiration. Respect for a mind that could turn nothing into everything, who saw value in what others often took for granted. Appreciation for someone who saw through his manipulations and still kept him around anyway.
That had been safe. Simple. Convenient, even. But admiration didn’t make you walk head first into enemy territory to gather intel. It didn't make your chest ache when someone was shot or stay up all night to watch them work themselves into the ground.
And it certainly didn’t make your heart race because they happened to be holding you in their sleep.
Gen let out a quiet, helpless little laugh. He knew his feelings were illogical, useless even. Falling for Ishigami Senku was perhaps the most foolish thing he could have ever done.

Assigning a deeper meaning to it would be like assigning intent to static electricity - annoying and surprising, but ultimately random. To be fair, the omega flirted with everyone - compliments and honeyed words coming as automatically as breathing did to him. He laughed and joked and touched without regard to gender or designation - which was why when he found himself on the receiving end of Gen’s flirtations Senku hadn’t been too surprised.
It had been easy enough to ignore as just another one of Gen’s oddities, but recently Senku had begun to swear that it was… different with him. That Gen was different with him.

Senku didn’t waste much time thinking about the societal politics of alphas, betas, and omegas. It wasn’t that he looked down on it – as an alpha and a scientist he acknowledged that certain biological imperatives had developed over thousands of generations of evolution and therefore had at least some reason for existing. He just found it irrelevant to his day-to-day life – chemistry didn’t care about scent hierarchies and physics wasn’t affected by estrus cycles.
Post-petrification, he gave just enough thought to get a rough estimate of when certain people would hit their cycles for resource planning, but beyond that gave little care to what he considered to be the interpersonal bullshit that went along with dynamic politics.

Summary
After failing to grasp the Star from the 46th scenario, Yoo Joonghyuk finds a different way to tie Kim Dokja to his side: a sub-scenario with a failure penalty of temporarily binding the participating incarnations' hands together. The penalty will only last a few days, but even this much is satisfying, especially after the years that Kim Dokja was gone.
Kim Dokja is just sick of everyone trying to babysit him, even if it's a bastard with a pretty face like Yoo Joonghyuk.

All stories have the potential to change - to evolve into stronger forms, to be rejected or overthrown, to be inherited and shifted to adjust to new owners. They’re malleable because the lifeblood of a narrative is the people that tell it, and how it is told can change the tone and messaging of a story even if the plot never changes.
And a Story like theirs, born from the relationship between them, is both one of the strongest and weakest types to exist. It can’t be easily twisted by outsiders, but if either one of them were to change how they felt about each other -

When Yoo Joonghyuk reunites with Kim Dokja in the 73rd Demon Realm, he has several orders of business: make Kim Dokja regret his actions from the tenth scenario, make Kim Dokja address his Fate from the tenth scenario, and make Kim Dokja agree to an imprint so that the likes of the tenth scenario cannot happen again.
Kim Dokja, very objectively and of sound mind, thinks that this is a bit ridiculous. An imprint between them - two alphas that hardly ever see eye to eye on anything outside of the very basics of survival - is unthinkable.
(Of course, this is ignoring the fact that Kim Dokja himself had formed a one-sided imprint on Yoo Joonghyuk a long, long time ago.)
