“You promised, Kacchan.”
“I know.” Katsuki’s voice was raw and raspy, like a blanket ripped and frayed from wear. That’s how he felt; worn thin with age, exhausted, holes in every piece of his soul.
Izuku lifted both hands, cupping the blonde’s face. Katsuki closed his eyes, unable to look at Izuku’s face. It hurt too much, to face him, to admit his own failings. If he’d just been a little faster, a little stronger. Then maybe he wouldn’t have to ruin his home to break down the guilt and pain he felt swallowing him whole.

“Where the hell have you been!?” Inko Midoriya’s voice screeched from down the hall. Izuku had just closed the door behind himself; he hadn’t even taken off his shoes yet. “Answer me, child!”
After he turned four, his parents never used his name anymore. He was ‘child’ or ‘boy’, never Izuku. It was but one more thing Izuku didn’t understand. He knew he had to answer when given a direct order, but it was so hard to force his throat to unclench so he could speak.
“I’m… sorry, Okaasan. The teacher requested help cleaning up after school.” He’d learned to lie at a very young age. If he told her he was walking slowly, she’d make him hurt more. It was easier to tell her something he made up in his head, and hope she didn’t try to verify the information he gave her.
Regardless of the lie, Inko walked over and laid a vicious slap across Izuku’s cheek. He barely flinched, keeping his eyes on the ground in between them.

“This better be life or death to interrupt my morning off.” Izuku pulled a knife out of the pocket of Dabi’s hoodie, having felt the weight of it there when he grabbed it from the closet. The knife was dangled from his fingers in an offhand threat to whomever was at the door, but Izuku didn’t look up.
“Uhh, no one told me it was your day off- do villains even get days off? Do we get holiday pay?” Izuku sighed as Giran’s voice entered the bar.
Setting down his mug, Izuku folded one leg over the other and glared at Giran with shameless hostility.
“Are those… bunny slippers?” Giran asked.

Summary
Everything came rushing back to Katsuki’s mind in an instant. Waking up to an emergency call, being sent out to the rural foothills along with most of the heroes in Japan for a devastating landslide emergency that was ravaging the countryside mountains and taking hundreds of lives. It had been a full rescue effort. Few heroes in the country had quirks that would suit a landslide, though more than a few tried to contain or stop the tragedy from getting worse. In the end, it was mainly a body recovery and rescue mission.
