Summary
When you slip on the ice, there is a moment before your brain registers what is happening. Your foot slides and loses its hold, your body dips to an unsustainable angle, your knees begin to buckle - but you have yet to put it together, have not yet figured out what you’re headed for. In the short second before the pain of hitting the ground and loosing your footing, all you feel is a lack of understanding and an alarming surge in your guts.
It’s like that now. Tozer sits watching Hickey paw Lieutenant Hodgson and feels the ground slip away and away.
Hickey tilts his head. “May I see to you?” he says to Hodgson, very gently.

Tozer becomes a willing witness to Hickey's seduction of Hodgson, and is seduced himself in the process.

It’s a miracle that Hickey still has Tozer trailing after him, after he’d nearly gotten him killed, and himself, too, on at least thirty separate occasions, but for all his virtues, Tozer’s never been a quick study.

“Don’t get dramatic,” Hickey says immediately, once Tozer pulls the door open and stares. The expression on his face is dramatic enough for the evening, Hickey thinks, although it is expressions, shock, confusion, hurt, then anger, in quick succession, as well as several others that Hickey can’t identify.
And then, nothing. Like a door in Tozer's face slams shut. “You were gone for four months,” Tozer says finally.
“Well, here I am now,” Hickey says.
Hickey comes home after four months.

“You’ve never seen me box,” Tozer finally says.
Hickey looks baffled at that. For a second that’s satisfying enough to make Tozer feel like less of an idiot for saying it, but not entirely. “I have,” he says finally—a reflexive lie, which makes Tozer exhale, exasperated.
“You haven’t. I’d have seen you.”
After everything, Hickey and Tozer make it to Boston. Tozer sets his sights on the ring; Hickey has his eyes on the horizon.
