“—And you’d better run now while you still have the chance, buddy,” Dennis can hear muffled from the other side of the door, in a tone so familiar he could’ve collapsed to his knees, “because I know karate—”
The door flies open while Mac is still mid-sentence. In the second it takes him to register Dennis standing there, he nearly finishes shouting, “And I’ll kick your fucking a—” before the last word cuts off.
Mac blinks in surprise, comically wide-eyed in his confusion. Then his face lights up, as Dennis’ whole world crumbles beneath him.
“Dennis?”
Dennis can only stare. Something is wrong here. Something is very, very wrong here. He’s looking at a Mac who, for all the irrefutable visual proof that he is Mac, isn’t. Not the one Dennis knows, anyway.

The car door is stiff, crackling like a sheet of ice as Dennis shoulders his way into opening it. His fingers are equally stiff as he fumbles with the buttons of his jacket, already feeling the invading cold creeping underneath.
“Where are you going?”
A scoff forces its way out of Dennis’ mouth. “Where do you think I'm going, Mac? We're a ten minute walk from our apartment and my legs still work.”
Mac and Dennis walk home in a snowstorm.
