The thing is—Bucky hates John Walker. Hates him enough to keep him alive, just so he can be the one to end him.

What if one of the other thunderbolts while cooking burns the meal and it freaks him out?" - anon.

would you ever write a fic of John getting captured (somehow idk) and him getting tortured but the whole time he’s just like “the team won’t come for me”. Like the kidnappers genuinely start to believe him, he’s so insistent, then the team comes for him (cause duh) and he’s just like, “ wow this is such a nice hallucination, my team came for me” says that stuff out loud and everyone’s kinda like??? Does this idiot think we wouldn’t?

    Summary

John had been shot before—when you’d seen as many combat scenarios as he had, you were bound to catch a stray bullet at least once. But the more he glanced down, trying to stay together in front of all these eyes, the more he realized he hadn’t just been clipped. No, he was lucky if this missed something vital.
He needed to get back to the Tower. He could deal with it there—and nobody would have to know he’d been brought down by one bullet.

Closely following their public debut, the Thunderbolts find themselves—in the absence of any aliens, robots, or wizards—taking on some very violent individuals with guns and itchy trigger fingers. John Walker gets badly injured—healing is a vulnerable thing that he makes easy for nobody, not even himself.

It was supposed to be a simple photo op. Of course it was going to go off the rails. Now they're all tired, and gross, and with his teammates dropping like flies John just needs to keep it together until they make it back to the jet.

He's fine. It hurts worse than it is.

    Summary

After everything that happened, losing Lemar, the shield, his family, John Walker is just trying to hold himself together. Working with the Thunderbolts gives him a purpose, but not a place to belong. Everyone seems to have moved on except him. They laugh, they tease, they go out together. He stays behind.
When his grief finally catches up to him, the truth spills out in a way he didn’t expect.

A story about guilt, loneliness, and wanting to be good, whatever that means now.

Pepper Potts Stark gives her opinion John Walker and surprisingly it's not negative but supportive. She proves he is a better Captain America than Steve Rogers and also gets the Senator who sacked him fired. All the while Bucky and Sam hate Pepper for replacing Steve Rogers.

Pepper Potts uses points based on a video I saw where an army veteran breaks down the John Walker Scene and proves he did nothing wrong

The worst part about it is that it could have been avoided.

John normally doesn’t think like that, can’t, because if he lingers on the what ifs then all of it comes crumbling down and there simply isn’t a point.

But now he can’t help but wish Bucky had been paying more attention. That Ava had been able to phase sooner, that Alexei had stuck with the group or that maybe Yelena would have tagged along instead of staying with Bob at the Tower.

Bucky is having a quiet moment in the kitchen of the team’s new home, enjoying the solitude of the night and a not-so-nice beer, when John walks in and joins him. He decides to seize the moment and asks John about something that’s been on his mind, pushing him for an answer.

    Summary

People said the grief would get better with time. That’s what he’d been told when his parents died, or other soldiers he’d fought alongside had been killed. And sometimes that was correct… but not with Lemar. John still felt Lemar’s absence every single day, sometimes counting the minutes in the dead of night, running the scene over and over until the sun rose. Too slow, too sloppy, distracted, careless. His fault.

Or, it’s been three years since Lemar Hoskins, Battlestar, best friend of John Walker, was killed. And John isn’t handling it very well.

“It’s mine,” he says, and fights, desperately, fervently.

He can’t give the shield up now, because then it’ll have all been for nothing.

It’ll mean Lemar died for nothing.

And John can’t live with that.

In which Lemar dies, John breaks, and the aftermath.
