“Huh?”
“Exercise, gambler. Do forgive me for assuming your level of familiarity with the concept.”
“I know what exercise is, doc—I just don’t see how getting all hot and sweaty is going to help. Sounds like it’d be worse, actually.” Aventurine pauses, and then (because he can’t help himself and because it would make him feel better about all this honesty) he wryly adds, “Unless you plan on getting all hot and sweaty with me…?”
“The very suggestion I was about to make, actually.”
Aventurine nearly drops his poker face.

Or, Aventurine is out of practice after Penacony, and Ratio offers to spar with him in the Simulated Universe. It leads to some unexpected internal revelations.

“To be honest with you? I didn't believe it, and even tested it a few times myself...until I discovered that I couldn't actually die. Whenever there's any danger, I'm forced to wake by the Dreampool, and it's all as if everything were just a nightmare.”
Aventurine had heard that it was impossible to die within Penacony’s dreamscape. That one would simply awaken in the Dreampool, back in reality as if nothing had happened. But to the gambler, the only proof he would accept was cold, hard, first-hand experience. And he was going to go all-in.

Summary
Dr. Ratio had never seen the power of Aventurine's Cornerstone up close. Sure, he'd seen the man's stunt in Penacony - but it was from quite a distance, and unfortunately, Aventurine hadn't stuck around long enough for Ratio to get a good look. A few weeks on, however, the good doctor gets his chance to see the Cornerstone's power in action... but at what cost?
TL:DR: Stoneheart Aventurine of Stratagems and Dr. Veritas Ratio get a lil freaky with each other ;) (Except Aventurine's boss form is actually more of a monster form oops)

"Aventurine had always considered himself to be a relatively smart guy. Maybe he'd go as far as to say really quite intelligent.
But the man stood at the spacecraft's luxury cabin window - one hand on his chin in thought, and the other holding up a small flashlight close to the glass - clearly felt otherwise, and it caused him no end of irritation."

During their flight on the way to Penacony, various arguments and personal revelations lead Aventurine and Ratio to make a wager, where they get up to certain... activities.

“You need something with which to occupy yourself, and taking care of animals can be psychologically stabilizing,” Ratio says. “These particular animals are self-sufficient enough to not be too much work for a first-time pet owner, but still possess conventionally appealing characteristics. Given your situation, they are the best option.”
“I don’t--” Aventurine exhales and pinches between his eyebrows. “Ratio, I don’t want pets.”
(While waiting to find out if he's been fired, Aventurine's been having some really, really unpleasant nightmares. Ratio brings him some creations to try to improve his mental health. They're surprisingly helpful--but they've got their work cut out for them.)

After the Penacony mission, Aventurine had turned his life around. He'd taken up productive hobbies, took more time off work, and amazingly, quit gambling. His eyes had a shine to them Veritas had never seen before. He seemed more alive than he'd ever been.
He would've been impressed, proud of him even, if not for one detail.
Six system months ago, Veritas had found Aventurine's dead body inside his Dreampool.

Aventurine doesn't understand half of those words, but it doesn't matter. The gun speaks clearly enough.
Kakavasha's riskiest gamble pays off, and he is hired by the Interastral Peace Corporation as Aventurine. A second chance at life, if he can survive it.
Without a Synesthesia Beacon, every conversation is a puzzle, a bluff. The new Stoneheart has learned to fake fluency in the IPC's language, Universalis, the same way he learned everything else: through observation and context, by slipping through the cracks with charm and deception.
That is, until Dr. Ratio cares enough to scrutinize him, and refuses to look away.

This isn’t how the mission was supposed to go.
Not with Ratio behind a locked door, falling apart piece by piece.
And definitely not with Aventurine on the outside, wishing he knew how to put him back together.
Or worse—knowing exactly how.
A mission takes an unexpected turn when Ratio unknowingly ingests a drink laced with remnants of the Propagation. Fearing he might lose control and hurt Aventurine, he locks himself away to ride it out alone. It’s up to Aventurine to coax him back out—but that’s easier said than done when he can’t bring himself to admit his feelings for the one person he can’t afford to lose.
