I’ve got a good track record as a plus-one, too.” Dennis had to say something. To interrupt. To shut this down. But what was he supposed to say? No, you can’t be my plus one, because I lied about my cousin, and there is no wedding, and it seems a little weird to bring a date to a fucking funeral– “Apparently parents love it when you bring home a doctor.”
And just like that, the bubble popped.
“I’m not gay,” Dennis snapped.
He had never hated the sound of his own voice as much as he did right then.

The cops said they would stay on the premises for one hour while he took his things out of the house. That’s what they told him the day he was discharged. He didn’t have any time to call Billy, or Morgan, or Chuckie. His real family. Because they’d waited long enough after his surgery that he could leave on his own, then picked him up in the cruiser to take him to dear ol’ dad’s place. It was kind of nice to take the ride in the front seat for once.

Rozanova cuts her off with an irritated huff. “To call me a bitch for stealing your costume? For making fun of you at Skate America? I will not say sorry. I do not say sorry.”
Shayne opens her mouth to answer the question, but Rozanova raises her hand and cuts her off before she says a word. “No. Shayne Hollander is good, polite Canadian girl. She takes no risks. Unless she skates against me, because I make her angry, and I make her horny, and this is when she skates the best. So I make you upset, and you land quad, even when I am not there. But sure, I am the bitch, for making you angry and horny and gold medalist.”
“Make me what?” Shayne sputters, hoping feverishly that nobody walking past understands English.
“Angry and horny and gold medalist,” Rozanova repeats. The grin on her face makes it clear she knows damn well Shayne didn’t need her to actually say it again.

Neil didn't answer right away. He stopped fidgeting with his jacket and slowly pushed himself up from his desk chair. He walked toward the bed, stopping at the edge, looming over Todd. The distance between them, felt cavernous.
"Does 'liking' mean having your stomach flutter when she walks into the room? Does it mean going completely silent, suddenly terrified you'll say something stupid? Does it mean the minute I found out you were out there on the dock, nearly freezing to death, the whole date became completely irrelevant, and all I could think about was getting you back into this room?"
