Summary
There was a time, Jaskier thought distantly, when he wouldn’t have minded this at all.
A time when he could simply grin and bear it as his own blood trickled down his chin, as his insides tore themselves apart and knitted themselves back together again, as the body that Jaskier had spent decades inhabiting decided it quite fancied a complete overhaul of everything, and made this known by bleeding Jaskier dry, setting his nerves on fire, and altogether destroying the bard little by little and all at once as his anatomy inched its way, excruciatingly, towards its new shape.
There was a time when Jaskier would have toughed it out, for the sake of the people who would be there on the other side, waiting for him, as well as himself.
That time had passed, however, long ago.

"There are no skunks on Skellige."
"I am as drunk as a Skelligen monk, then."
Which is fairly drunk, all things considered; Skelligens don't fuck around about that sort of thing.
Geralt has been foolish about many things in his long life, and every time to his detriment; he'll not make the mistake of deluding himself that someone like Jaskier, with all the world open to him and everything to offer in return, would ever really choose Geralt's company in that way.
(Geralt may not be a reliable narrator of his own life.)

Summary
Geralt is so painfully aware of the obvious traits he has that suggest he is less than human. The claws, the fangs, the affinity for eating raw meat. He knows well that they are frightening, knows that when humans see them . . . it’s undeniable proof that he is what they think he is. A monster, if he’s being dramatic. Jaskier is so painfully unaware of all of the things that Geralt does to keep himself from looking the way he was made to. There’s not much he can do about his eyes. There’s not much to do about his hair. But there are things to persist around the rest of it. Habits that Geralt has formed to keep himself looking and acting as- normal as he can. At least, when they are around other people.Jaskier starts to notice some inconsistencies, and he just wants to ask: What the fuck, Geralt?
TW: Although Geralt is not self-harming in a manner we usually see, he is doing things to alter his appearance despite the fact that they are painful. He has a severe disregard for his own safety or comfort. The conversation would be different if he was doing something painful because he felt he deserved the pain. That is an equally important conversation to have, but not addressed in this fic.
