The tears were what got him, reminding Tony of that day. The day he worked tirelessly for seven months to reverse. The only other time, up until now, he had seen Peter cry. Had seen him this terrified. Tony had to remind himself that Peter wasn’t ash stuck in between his fingernails anymore. That he was a living, breathing person. A person who was currently hyperventilating from a panic attack in a back alley in Queens.

“I am,” Peter says. He tosses the pillow. “Indebted—no. Inebriated.” He winks, nodding. “Vocabulary.”
Tony narrows his eyes and marches over there, hovering above him. “Uh. Why?”
Now that he’s closer, Tony can see the bruises on Peter’s forehead, the cut across his jaw, and the new cuts slashing all over the suit.
“And you’re fucking hurt,” Tony says, his blood pressure skyrocketing. He kneels down, his knees immediately cursing him, and hauls Peter to his feet. The two of them straighten up—Peter sways and his eyes go saucer-wide and he laughs a little bit, like standing is a very new, special activity.

This being: another night forced to bed rest because he sort of, slightly, maybe got one of his fingers the littlest bit totally cut off. Who needs bed rest over a finger? It's ridiculous! It's stupid! It's completely unwarranted.

Both guys are wearing masks, one red and one black, and they loom over them.
“No, it’s not,” Tony hisses, and he throws his arm out across Peter’s chest, like that’s gonna fucking do something. He grits his teeth. “If you’re gonna hurt one of us, hurt me! Say you beat the shit out of Iron Man, that’ll do something for your reputation—”
Black mask laughs. “Spider-Man’s more our speed—”
“Beating up on a goddamn child, that’s cute, that’s real cute.” He doesn’t say he could kill you if you didn’t restrain him because he doesn’t want to give them any ideas about how strong Peter is. He has visions of experiments and torture and he doesn’t even know what this is, but he needs it done, now.
Tony tries to keep shielding him, but it doesn’t take much for them to reach around him and grab Peter up. Peter barely fights, just lets himself get dragged away.

His fault.
The billowing fire cloud packs a punch, sucks itself in like a giant monster bubble before bursting, and Peter is thrown—he hits the back of the lab, up in the juncture between the ceiling and the wall. It cracks his neck and he sees stars, landing hard on a fully-occupied workstation. He feels something stab through his side, and he cries out—he hears a few things fall, and there’s another explosion, echoing like a hollow scream against the metal walls.
The new wound is beating like a second heart. The blood seeping through his Princess Leia shirt is warm and sticky.
More shelving collapses and he hears a pipe burst, and something hard hits the workstation right next to him and slices it in half—he crumples to the ground in a simmering heap, and something round and weighty hits him square in the ear.
His hearing goes high pitched. Everything watery, slow motion. He squeezes his eyes shut tight, and the world tilts and pitches. Tries to toss him off.

Tony starts heading towards the south entrance like a man possessed, weaving through the dining room and out into the hallway. He pushes the door open and moves into the foyer, and sees Peter standing there by the door.
Peter looks up like he didn’t expect to see him there, and his eyes are red-rimmed like he’s been crying. He looks strange, shell-shocked, and Tony sees the abrasion Friday mentioned, and a cut on his side that sliced right through the suit. His hands are shaking, and he’s holding his arms close to himself, like he’s trying to be small.
Tony strides towards him, trying to hold eye contact. “What’s wrong, bud?” he asks, his heart beating in his ears. He reaches him, immediately gripping Peter’s elbow. “What’s wrong? What happened?”
Peter stares at him for a second, and then he shakes his head, looking down at the ground. “Nothing,” he says, voice dry and wavering. “I’m—I’m fine. It’s fine.”
Tony doesn’t mean to, but he scoffs, stepping closer. “You’re fine? You don’t look fine. It doesn’t seem fine.”

It’s Tony’s birthday, and just about every superhero known to man is here, all of them mingling with each other in the kind of scene any reporter would shit themselves over. Peter had been worried about the possibility of someone attacking them while they’re all gathered in one place, but Tony assured him that he had contingencies, and left it at that.
But Peter isn’t worrying about that anymore. He’s staring over at Tony, who seems to be getting a gentle verbal-lashing from Pepper before she presses a hard kiss to his forehead, leaving him behind and on his own again. Tony’s been acting strange as hell for the past half hour or so—he was completely normal, talking to everyone, having fun, and then he—wasn’t. Then he got weird, started sitting alone, swaying and laughing at people who passed him by, no matter who they were.
Peter doesn’t like it.

Tony watches him do another outrageous flip, spinning at least three times in the air. The web he lets go of soars like a party streamer. He shoots another one, swings from it, and quickly shoots one more, launching himself high.
“What the hell is with all the acrobatics?” Tony asks, flying up higher. Peter shoots more webs, completely unnecessarily, and they firework all around them. “I know you’re a part of the circus, but you’re at your day job right now, bud—”

He hasn’t talked to Tony in a week. Not since—the incident. He’s talked to Pepper, sure, and Happy more than anybody else, but he definitely hasn’t stepped foot in the tower since it all happened. Peter doesn’t really hold grudges, especially against people he loves, but—it just happened this way. He didn’t want it to, but it did, and neither one of them have backed down. It sucks. It sucks. He doesn’t even like to think about it. He wants it to end, but he’s still just—hurt. The deep kind of hurt that makes it hard to form coherent sentences, or have coherent thoughts.
He sighs, and Pepper looks over her shoulder at him.
“You okay, honey?” she asks, slowing down a little bit. “I swear, he’s not here.”
Peter shakes his head, his brows furrowing. “No, it’s—it’s fine,” he says.
