Buck slumps against the wall and swears quietly. “We’re not digging our way out of this, Eds,” he says.
“I know.” He should tell Buck. He should tell him because he’s not going to get another chance because they’re going to die in here. The words rattle around his head the way they’ve been doing for months, but his vocal chords are frozen.

They’ve finished eating, but Eddie doesn’t want to get up from the table.
He’s been at Buck’s for a couple of hours already, having arrived in time for them to prep dinner together, the quick collision of their knives against the cutting board such a contrast to the way they’d moved around each other, settled into the rhythm of Buck’s playlist, one probably far too soft for a meal shared between friends. After a while, Buck had taken over most of the cooking while Eddie hovered nearby, one hand light at Buck’s hip whenever Eddie had reached past him to steal a bite of something, Buck turning into the touch every time, just for the chance to swat him away. And then they’d made their way to the table to eat, reliably comfortable there whether Chris is with them or not.
Right now, he’s not. Hasn’t been the last couple of times, actually, and however much Eddie has complained about that before, tonight he watches Buck’s cheeks start to go pink when his gaze lingers too long, and he can’t wish for anything but the chance to promise Buck forever just to see what color they might turn then.
