The morning after hooking up for the first time, Steve is halfway to falling in love while Eddie is cold and withdrawn and unable to look Steve in the eye.
The King of Hawkins High has to work had to convince Eddie that their date was real, that the note he left was nothing like the other humiliating, degrading notes the other boys leave in the locker when they want Eddie's mouth but don't give a damn about his heart.
Steve cares so much-- maybe too much?-- about Eddie's heart and Eddie's smile and he's not about to let Eddie regret their night together. He wants another chance to treat Eddie RIGHT, and even if it takes an argument, a whole lot of alcohol and a stumbling, slurring shouted confession in the middle of the trailer park to talk Eddie into giving him another chance.

“Steve Harrington. Never thought I’d see the day when you wandered into my shop.”
Fuck.
Still facing the sky, Steve blinked, unseeing, utterly burning from the inside out. He thought his skin, suddenly far too tight for his bones and painful, even, had surely caught flame.
All the things he expected to feel at that moment… deep hurt, unending sadness, bitter anger, crippling nerves, keen loss, acute embarrassment, flaming lust… somehow, he had been left with nothing but only because there had been, just for the span of a single heartbeat—everything. Steve was a blazing star that had burned bright and hot before blowing out, leaving nothing but empty matter in its wake. All that emotion had scorched its way through him in the span of a blink, an inferno of feeling that burned everything in Steve. He felt like a wrung-out sponge, like his body wasn’t quite his own. Like those weren’t his limbs or his worn-out, broken heart.
A second had passed since he heard that voice calling out to him. Or maybe it had been another eternity.
One thing, though, was for certain. Steve never thought he’d see the day when he heard Eddie Munson bark out his name again.

“Don’t stand in the way, new guy. Wouldn’t want to mess up that pretty face. No newbie shaped pancakes on my watch, no siree.” Eddie put his hand on Steve’s shoulder and seemed to study him.
The interaction left him frozen, and Steve realized that his face must’ve been red, because when Robin finally came around the corner, she asked him why he looked like a tomato. He shook his head and refused to explain.
“Seems like you just met a certain someone,” Robin said speculatively, eyebrows raised.
Steve could not, would not satisfy her with an answer, so he simply walked to the break room and sat down, releasing a mortified groan into his hands.
Eddie thought he had a pretty face.
