He stood up abruptly at the sound, almost falling as pain shot through his leg once more. He bit his lip not to cry out, and quickly steadied himself against the back of the chair when his eyes found who the man lurking in the shadows was.

It was a familiar dance they performed. Baelor would summon him and then behave as politely as ever, as if there was nothing unusual in inviting the heir of Storm's End to join him in his quarters late at night. Lyonel had quickly understood his role in this game. It was his task to draw out the prince's reactions, to allow the tension simmering just below the surface to slowly unravel.

Summary
He had then prepared himself to leave, his mind already on other missions, especially the situation escalating in Ghorman and what must be done there. Already the weight of the massacre that could happen on that planet settled heavily on his mind. Some of his thoughts must have appeared on his face or it was becoming easier and easier for Saw to read them because, in retrospect, Saw’s command shouldn’t have surprised him.
So when Saw told him to stay, he did so without arguing.

Maekar’s world had come to a stop when the Kingsguard informed him of Baelor’s condition. Dread settled at the pit of his stomach, ice in his veins. It had been but moments since Aerion had been in his arms, barely conscious, but alive. Maekar had no time to feel any sense of relief as the panic returned in full force, and with it the thought of losing the person he loved most.
Or: Baelor survives the blow to his head. Maekar does not forgive himself.
