Summary
Charles knew the case would affect them both, yeah. He just thought it'd be something they'd share a little look about, maybe read some Max Carrados afterwards just for the sake of nostalgia but that's not at all what happens.
Edwin doesn't say much after the case is closed— not on the walk back, which Edwin had insisted on and not when they finally find themselves back at the office after their journey home.
Charles has his back to the door so he can't help but flinch at the loud slam of what he assumes is Edwin's notebook against the surface of his desk. He whips around, eyes wide and his incorporeal heart pounding in his chest at the sudden and uncharacteristic burst of anger.
"Edwin? What the hell was that, mate?"

“Sure,” Charles says with a shrug, just as Edwin exclaims, “Absolutely not!”

Summary
The only other person Mike tells about his newly discovered feelings for Will, is Max, for some reason. It’s late at night when he calls her, impulse taking over, and he whispers into the dark about forbidden feelings and first loves. But instead of the stunned silence he’d expected, she only laughs, for a long time, bright and sparkling through the phone line, and Mike can’t even find it in himself to be mad.
“I’m just glad you’ve finally come to your senses,” she says, once she’s finally calmed down.
“What?” He asks, because he doesn’t have a clue what that’s supposed to mean.
“It’s just, I think that everyone knew before you did,” she says, but her voice catches in her throat like she’s stifling a giggle.
It takes Will moving away to college for Mike Wheeler to finally, finally realize some things.
All he has to do now is wait for Will to get back.

"Really?" Crystal didn't even try to fight back the laugh she let out, "Because you two are acting like one of you forgot your thirty-fifth friendiversary."
Edwin's jaw clenched again. He looked again to his book.
"Charles and I have only known each other 34 years."
"That's bullshit," Crystal said and waited for Edwin to look up again. It hardly took a second, interjection primed on his tongue, but Crystal continued before he had the chance to speak, "You two have been best friends for 34 years, but now you're acting like you guys can't stand each other."
Or
Charles and Edwin are fighting, Crystal is dealing with the consequences.

The boy’s face crumpled. It was as if Edwin had somehow found the exact worst thing to say to him, like he’d not only stabbed him but twisted the knife on the way out.
The last thing he saw before he died was the boy, face red from screaming as he reached out for Edwin.
It almost looked like he was sad.
XXXSome unknown events in Hell strip Edwin of his memories, leaving him with no knowledge of the last few decades. Charles is going to save him though, even if he has to drag Edwin out, kicking and screaming.
