Tag, trees, sandcastles, and sleepovers...and peeks back to a time of childhood, before. Bruno, Mirabel, and Antonio have formed a friendship in the year since Casita’s rebirth, and they help each other rediscover and preserve the child within in unexpected, meaningful ways.
When we are forced to move too quickly past childhood, that child self doesn’t go away. It stays within us, waiting for the chance to be. La traes…la traes la pena, y la traes la alegría esperando ser, contigo. You bring it with you…you bring the sorrow and the joy waiting to be.
This is a standalone fic, but also acts as a sequel to my fic Bruno from Before.

As surely as each of the Madrigal children were blessed with the hefty responsibility of a magical gift, so too, did they each carry forward through the generations the long, arduous, and time-honored tradition of gastando bromas--playing pranks.Las bromas became a language of love between the triplets, affectionately portioned out when they each needed it most.When Julieta began spending too much time in the kitchen, going to bed too late and rising far too early, Bruno and Pepa would join together to plan a mischievous intervention.When Pepa’s winds picked up in desperate starts and stops as she cycled into cyclones of anxiety, Julieta would most certainly be found in Bruno’s room, eyes worried but mouth determined, ready to intervene. And when Bruno would retreat to his tower, overburdened, over-quiet, and reclusive, the girls wouldn’t wait long before descending on him with the merciless jolt of life only a prank could bring. It was una broma benévola, as Julieta coined it one day, soon only referred to by its cryptographic name to maintain the utmost secrecy: BB, or la bebé.

Bruno the introvert and Mirabel the extrovert are an unlikely pair, but they both find ways to support each other.

When left to his own devices, Bruno was a hermit, plain and simple. He’d lose track of time, lost in his own head, and suddenly wouldn’t leave the house for days on end. He’d get lost in a book or something he was writing or drawing, and hours would pass with no company but his own, and it would all feel perfectly fine…in the moment. But without Mirabel to show up at his door and pull him back into the bright and glaring reality of life and society, Bruno knew he would eventually find himself lost in that bitter, dark pit that was loneliness. He’d begin in a place of contentment, enjoying the silence of seclusion and the easy peace of his own solitary company. Heck, he needed that solitude or at times he thought his head might just explode from the pressure of all the things to see and hear and feel and attempt to understand. But eventually, that seclusion would turn into withdrawal, and he would no longer be replenishing, but hiding.
You see, it often wasn’t until his sobrina would grab his hand and pull him back to his feet that he’d even realize how far he’d fallen.

Summary
I lived with this hunger long before the Hail Mary. This is nothing new. I’m fine.
Right up until Rocky asks another question.
“When last time you touch other human person skin, question?”
Oh. Oh no. “When I… a few days after I first woke up here.”
Rocky starts to relax for a split second, but then tightens when something occurs to him.
“Grace crewmates dead when you wake up. You said this, statement. You not even know your own name, remember nothing, see dead bodies, confirm?”
I nod, because if I open my mouth I will gag.
“When last time Grace touch ALIVE human person, question.”
I swallow thickly. I don’t answer aloud because I know Rocky can hear the hitch in my breath. My stomach churns with fresh bile. He senses my vital signs tick over into stress patterns and goes very, very still again.
“Grace. When last time, question.”
I clench my jaw so hard my temples ache, and beg him with my eyes to just stop.
“Grace. Please say not when… when Evil Stratt humans put you to sleep.”
I can taste grass.
