    Apparently, and this is wild, shots were fired into the back of an ambulance where the driver who caused the accident was loaded and awaiting transport. Can you imagine? Shooting into an ambulance?

    There are so many firehouses in Austin with their own EMS units. On top of that there’s the private companies like Paragon. The odds that the ambulance that was fired on is TK’s would have to be ridiculously small.

    The odds, however, have never been something that could be counted on when it came to TK Strand and his penchant for being in the midst of one disaster or another.

    The envelope stares at him the entire way home. It lurks in the corner of Carlos’s eye, pulling him to look at it whenever he has to stop at a traffic light. He’s been honked at more than once for his distraction, not realising that the lights have changed until several minutes later. 

    But he can’t help it. Even if it’s been weeks since he last saw it, he can still pick out that handwriting from a million miles away, never mind when it’s less than two feet away on his passenger seat.

    Even the drawn-on balloons have that messy scrawl to them that marks them unmistakably as TK’s.

    A series of unfortunate events and an accident: that's what might make Owen's worst fears a reality. That's what might finally take his son from him.

    Carlos just wants to know why: why the universe keeps trying to throw these curves at them. Especially after everything; especially now that they were finally standing on steady ground. He wants to believe that what they have is stronger than anything, but it's hard to hold onto hope when the person you love the most is being taken from you—again.
