Kyouji watched it trickle out of his mouth, curling up towards the shelter that protected them from the rain, wanting to seal their mouths together and push it all back in, keeping the corruption inside. There was no way he could say what he needed to say with his eyes on Satomi, and so he looked down at the street below, thumbing the end of his cigarette and imagining the traces of Satomi’s saliva there. He placed it between his lips and sucked, closing his eyes to taste it.

The once proud ship was in ruin, foremast broken to less than half its original height, the sails hung in tatters, waving gently in the light breeze, and most importantly there was a gaping, splintered hole in the hull.
Some of the crew were in the shallows, collecting any debris they could find and hauling it to shore, and Stede could only stare. This was the ship that saved him from a life of unhappiness and monotony, the only home he had ever known, his heart ached that he had allowed her to come by such damage, that he hadn’t been able to keep her safe.
“It’s fixable,” was all Ed could offer.
