When Bilbo puts himself between Thorin and Azog's blade, his mithril shirt protecting them both, it isn't long before some dwarves whisper that 'Oakenshield' might not be the best epithet for their king anymore. But for Bilbo, barred from Thorin's sight since the battle, this new epithet only adds to the sting. Summary
It was never meant to end like this. It had gone from a dangerous battle, but one they were sure to win, to their enemies decimated with Bilbo lying cold and still on the icy cliff. In the aftermath of the battle, unable to bear haunting the halls where he was consumed by his gold sickness, Thorin left Erebor. He knew not where he was travelling, only that he could no longer stay in that infernal mountain.
