He stared at Clown for a moment more, before abruptly turning back to the machine. Branzy poked around in the mechanical guts, trying to keep his heart from picking up speed. Had Clown been … he couldn’t have been. Could he? Was he flirting?

And then, just as he thinks maybe he can finally move on, Derek finds him. He's alive, and mostly intact, and Avery allows the relief and joy of seeing his friend in real life to overshadow the cracks creeping through Derek's even-keeled facade. "I love you," has Derek in complete immobility trying to wrap his head around it, suddenly pausing as he washes the dishes. The source of his confusion and sudden paralyzed state of mind has his chin on his shoulder and arms looped around his waist, but the cause of his sudden apraxia remains to be those words.
"I love you," has Avery humming, continuing with his attempts in cooking an omelet with a smile. The words slip through his ears like water through his fingers. Derek is sat on the kitchen table with a convincing look on his face. Somehow Avery finds it hard to swallow those words when they seem so easily said, so he grins.

So, when he does wake up, somehow able to function with both the weight of infinite knowledge and the King In Yellow screaming in his head, he's a bit surprised. But no matter. Now he has a new goal: Find Avery.
Or: Derek survives and the first thing he does is track down his new boyfriend.

Summary
Every single path he'd ever taken was never a surprise, it was expected. Provoking emotions he wasn't fond of, never ones positive.
But this, this singular route, the one he devastatingly anticipated- it made him feel good, it made him feel wanted. Perhaps it was in the heat of the moment, but merely watching Avery slip his chest-plate off felt pleasurable.
Derlord didn't want to think anymore, all he wanted to do was consume. Devour Avery like he'd been starved all his life- it was all he wanted to do.
