She’s itching with the need to get up, to yank out all of the wires tethering her to this tiny little room, to run — run back home and scoop the two of them into her arms, to hold Lisa and never let her go, to watch them sleep and listen to them breathe and to just be there.
The distance between them hurts like a physical ache, like someone’s reached down her throat and is squeezing at her heart with their bare hands. Bile rises in her throat at the thought of them, at the thought of Betsy, so convinced she’s all grown up one minute and then violently wrenched back to reality the next, cradled in her mum’s arms and crying herself to sleep, facing a kind of heartbreak Carla can’t even imagine going through at sixteen.
