Last night, she had been buoyed by her own reflections on conventional life, by Lizzy’s reaction to the non-proposal and the frank conversation that followed it, by the sheer excitement of it all. That Mr Ryder enjoyed her company, made her laugh, and was offering her an escape route.
In the cold light of morning, from the moment Pemberley had faded from view, that had all crumbled quickly, until she was left feeling quite empty at the prospect indeed.

Ch 3: Ryder swims out toward the boat. Mary tells Tom to seize the oars and row.

‘You were there when she collapsed. I remember your faces when I carried her to her room, how terrible it was. Holding Mary in my arms, looking down at her, she was so fragile and – ’ Suddenly, Tom took off his spectacles and wiped his hand furiously across his eyes. ‘Forgive me.’ More quietly, he repeated in an altered tone. ‘Forgive me, please.’
There had been times in the past two months when Tom’s inexplicable disappearance had disappointed her. But her heart ached for him now, for all he had said and what he had not, the suffering which was so palpable and the diffidence which had been so grotesquely exploited.

“What did Mr Hayward actually say, Mr Ryder?” she huffed, all worries about being rude out of the window. Mr Ryder had the decency to look ashamed as he spoke.
“He said that he would be in need of a wife for the chambers to take him seriously for promotion. It’s a question of status as much as anything, you understand. Tom said that…well, that it didn’t much matter who the wife was as long as they were vaguely tolerable.”
Mary felt her nose twitch. Her hands had balled into fists under the table in her lap.
“...Vaguely tolerable?”
aka: ryder is getting a bit desperate, so he tells a white lie to dissuade mary from tom. naturally, it only brings them closer (after a few tears are shed)
