Edward's expression immediately withers away into something unreadable, his eyes fixed on a spot on the floor. "Yeah. Guess I'm an Alpha."
"Congratulations, Edward. I know you had been worried the Gate had stolen this from you as well." Roy wants to reach out and touch him. Something. Anything to make Ed look at him again.

Summary
This is what Jean would call “flirting,” when it comes to Roy and Edward. Of course, Jean’s bar is comically low, so he is a poor judge—and Roy would tell him so to his face. If Roy really wanted to flirt with Ed—and it’s not so much a question of want as it is a question of whether Ed would take it well or be in any way amenable—it would be far more intentional and done with far more panache than a little witty banter over breakfast-for-pre-dinner.

Summary
Roy Mustang goes out to investigate an explosion, and what he finds is himself. Specifically, his seventeen year old self, shaken and terrified and somehow jumped forwards in time by twelve whole years. How time-travel is even possible evades him, but he knows they need to find a way to send the younger version of Roy back to his own time.
Edward joins the efforts, lending his mind to the problem - but what Ed finds is a sweet kid so in touch with his emotions that he cries all the time and stands up for what's right even at great danger to himself. In other words, the complete opposite of the Bastard Colonel.
As they all work together to send Roy back to the past they inevitably become closer, what starts as friendship turns to more, and questions about who Colonel Mustang is finally let Ed see his CO in a new light.

It wasn’t a shape Stanley was especially accustomed to, but it wasn’t uncomfortable. He’d never experimented much with this sort of thing before the parable. It wasn't just the toy, but the whole dynamic. He’d gotten on his knees for others, yes, and he’d had it pretty rough a handful of times, but--well. He’d been a bit boring, he supposed. More straight to the point. The Narrator brought out a different side of him. More aggressive, sure, but also capable of a very unique kind of joy.

Or, Stanley and The Narrator play a game, and Stanley is eager to win.
