Summary
“It’s a heliotrope.” Sam says, and Dean turns his head so he can look at him. Dean moves the washcloth off of his head, and the cold slimy material makes his skin prickle.
Sam is sitting at the motel table, hunched over his computer like he’s trying to merge it with his torso. He’s been twirling the flower stem between his fingers absentmindedly which Dean thinks is a little gross—that thing came out of him, but whatever.
Or: Dean is cursed with Hanahaki disease, and wants to die with some dignity. Sam is going to save his brother at any cost. A story in two parts.

Summary
“I’ve got to go back,” Dean tells Mary with an empty but determined look in his eyes. His voice shakes as he tells her, “Gotta get his body. I’m not leaving him out there.”
He keeps reliving that other terrifying, gut-wrenching night, when he had to walk away from Sam, leaving him alone in an empty cabin after the werewolf attack in order to save other people. Remembering how, in those moments, he had finally started to admit how he really felt about Sam; and the realization he had that there was no life without him, only after it was too late.
He remembers how he killed himself to try and get Sam back only to find out that Sam wasn’t even dead.
Not again. He won’t leave Sam’s body out there. Dean never even saw the body this time. Just in case…in case Sam’s not really dead. In case Sam got turned. Whatever the situation, he can't leave Sam out there. Cannot do it. He needs to bring him home.

Summary
One of the petals is still in Sam’s hand. It’s soft and silky, and it looks tiny and innocuous in his palm. It’s probably fitting that someone as sick as Sam is, in his heart and in his mind and in all the ways he wants Dean, is being killed by something that sounds and looks as sweet as morning glory.
Also, it would be nice if the damn thing stuck to the mornings, but although the coughing is worse in the early mornings, the coughing is intermittent throughout the day. Sam covers his mouth when he coughs, hides the red petals in his hands, stuffing them into the pockets of his jeans, or letting them fall onto the ground if he can do so without being seen. He thinks of himself like Hansel, leaving petals instead of breadcrumbs, except, unlike Hansel he’s forever lost.

Sam wins. Although the price may be steep, he will do anything to keep Dean safe, even if that means keeping his brother locked up. All Dean wants is to wrench Sam back from the irrevocable darkness threatening to obliterate his soul.
Or the one in which Sam is the sole survivor in When Hell Breaks Loose (S2E21) and becomes the Boy King of Hell, hence inciting the apocalypse.
