Summary
The trick to Jack Abbot's coffee was that there wasn't one, and Robby had learned it anyway.
At a quarter to six Robby was at the counter, hair still wet, scrub top inside-out, half-assembled for the day shift, when Jack wandered in. He had no business being awake—it was his night off—but years of working nights had worn the ordinary hours smooth in him, and he'd never quite managed to sleep through Robby's side of the bed going cold. So he got up, the way he always did the mornings he was home, to stand in the kitchen and see the man off. His coffee was waiting on the counter—black, scalding, two sugars he'd deny to his grave that he took. Robby had made it, the way Robby made it every morning Jack was home to drink it: the one with somewhere to be looking after the one without. Jack picked it up without breaking stride, the way you'd pick up your own hand. He didn't say thank you. Thank you was for strangers. He bumped his shoulder into Robby's on the way to the window and that was the whole sentence, subject and verb and object: you, here, this.

Summary
Gabriel was just about to start on the E-FAST when suddenly everything cut out. Jack sucked in a sharp breath from where he’d been reapplying pressure to the wound as the noise of the ER just… stopped. Jack was left with nothing but the dreaded ringing in his ears that overshadowed the muffled sound of his residual hearing.

Summary
But now, with work officially handed off, Jack grabs him by the collar and leans up on his toes —the sheer fact that he has to do that when he never has before with anyone else is dizzying all by itself—and plants one on him.
Jack knows the kids are staring, probably cashing in on a fucking betting pool started by Dana or Ellis or Walsh—and he doesn’t care.

Summary
“Well, if you’ve never tried it, that’s all the more reason to come camping with me," Jack says. "It’s less than a two-hour drive, it’s great for hiking, and my tent fits two people.”
Robby looks amused. “Are you going to protect me from bears?”
“If I have to,” Jack says, which is better than the more inappropriate, if equally true, I would take a bullet for you. “So, is that a yes?”
Robby’s dark eyes dart, briefly, to the floor, then back up to meet Jack's gaze. “Do you really want me there?”
Or: Twelve hours after Robby leaves on his sabbatical, Jack’s phone buzzes with an incoming call. Jack spends the next few weeks bullying Robby into staying in his guest room, then staying in his tent, and then just staying, period.

Summary
Parker had just gotten the patient's CT results when Toomarian pulled up short by central and stuttered out, "So, um, is it possible that Dr. Robby and Dr. Abbot are about to make out in Trauma 1?"
The intern clocking their weirdness on day one? That might be a new record.
Parker didn't bother looking up from her tablet. "Now that sounds like the definition of not my business," she drawled. "But if you see any hot man-on-man action, note the date and time. Ahmad's got a pool going."

Summary
He walked over to take a look at the picture himself.
Sure enough, staring back at him proudly from the grainy Polaroid that had clearly been scanned in at some point over the years, stood a very baby-faced, teenage Jack Abbot wrapped up in the very same leather jacket he was wearing now (less a couple of badges), arms crossed over his chest, gesturing idly to the car that had been trashed behind him, with the air of an artist standing beside his work.
“In fact, I’m pretty proud of that one,” he remarked.
OR: It's halloween, a costume-mandate has been issued from the powers that be, and Jack Abbot has been punk rock all his life.

Summary
Instead, happiness had turned out to be a man with cold extremities.
Because of course it had.
Jack shifted behind him and, with a level of audacity usually reserved for toddlers and Roman emperors, slid his frozen foot against Robby’s calf.
Robby shot upright.
“No.”
Jack burst out laughing.
“No. Absolutely not. That is an act of war.”

Summary
The hours in the days that follow are marked by the sunlight, and then lack thereof. Then sleep. Shower. The periods of travel are divided by the breaks when he becomes too hungry to keep going like a wind-up toy.
He'd thought he would be existing by the established shift rhythm. 8 am, 10 am, 2 pm. Hand-off.
But no. Truly, some sort of string had been cut off, somewhere between taking the bike away from the hospital parking spot and reaching the first hotel. It isn't exactly a relief, even if his body thinks it is.
Robby leaves on his Sabbatical alone, with plans. Except, technically, he's not alone. He just doesn't know it yet. No one does.
