Jinu walked out of the palace a ghost, cursed with the knowledge that the body the humans mourned was somebody else. He had no idea whose body it was, and he did not care to figure it out. Gwi-Ma had his own methods.
But a man turned demon had to die to survive.
Now, the whispers pounded on the inside of his skull, louder than ever before.
“You’re mine now, Jinu,” growled Gwi-Ma. His voice was grating, like that of a rusted sword scraping against wood. “Come to me.”

Summary
“‘I wanted to set you free’?” Jinu reads the words out loud slowly, as if that will help him make sense of them. It doesn’t work— he still feels as confused and mildly concerned as he did before. “I know you said the words can have mysterious and unexpected meanings but this just sounds…” He grimaces. “Tragic.”
His mother laughs to herself, shaking her head. “You can be so pessimistic. It could mean anything.”
“They’re last words.” Jinu traces over the neat writing on his wrist. The color is vibrant, almost blue-ish, which only further makes it sound like his Soulmate is probably a yangban girl. And that makes Jinu think the context behind the words means it’s a relationship that won’t end well for him. “I’m not seeing any other explanation here.”
(Or Soulmates have the last words they say to each other written on their wrists. Rumi and Jinu know how this will end, or at least, they think they do.
Funnily enough, Soul Bonds don’t account for the nature of demons.)

Her fingers were calloused and her wrist sore. The tightening sensation had increased as the weeks went on. She had this problem for as long as she could remember—or at least as long as she was training to be a hunter. After all, she used her left hand to play guitar. But since last year, the problem had gotten worse.
Mira had claimed it was carpal tunnel, and Zoey had even brought her back to Healer Han the other day. Rumi drank his grape-flavored potion, but nothing seemed to work.
“It’s been paining you for years, am I right, Rumi-nim?” Healer Han asked in a follow-up call. “Perhaps it is because you’ve brushed sleeves with someone with whom you’ve had a past connection. It is possible that the connection is so strong that it now manifests itself through the ache in your wrist.”

Or, to Rumi, there are things more important than the destiny the world has handed to her, and she will make her own fate. To Jinu, fate is just another word for "cage."

“I had nowhere else to go,” Rumi said, barely holding herself up under the storm.
Jinu blinked as he looked at her standing in front of him, as if he couldn’t believe his eyes. As if she were an illusion that could vanish into the rain at any moment. His eyes swept over her with such intensity that he was sure she could feel his gaze like a physical touch. And then he saw the blood.
Before his brain could process it all, she seemed to let go of the last thread of will keeping her upright, and collapsed. And again, without thinking, he caught her in his arms as if it were the most natural thing in the world. As if she belonged there. As if they weren’t sworn enemies who had tried to kill each other.
In the end, Jinu knew something was irrevocably wrong in his head, and the ultimate proof was how he carried the body of that hunter as if she meant something to him, and took her into his apartment, even though he knew that if anyone found out, he would’ve been better off born dead.

When the honmoon turned gold and didn't take Rumi's patterns away with it, she couldn't handle it. She vanished without a word. But then people began summoning demons through the honmoon, and things had to change. Now, she’s scarred—by surgery, by guilt, by friends who no longer trust she’ll stay. Huntr/x, the group she once held together, fell apart in her absence, eclipsed by the meteoric rise of the Saja Boys.
Meanwhile, the Golden Honmoon trapped the Saja Boys in hell. With no souls and no food, the demons grew hungrier and hungrier until a summoning pulled them back. Bound by a twisted contract to perform or starve, they’re determined to kill the group who sealed them away.

Rumi looks down. “Your soul,” she whispers mournfully, enraptured by the blue light trickling out of his chest. “It’s beautiful.”
Jinu smiles.
Gently, he presses his forehead against hers. Rumi jolts, eyes widening, but to his relief, she doesn’t pull away.
“My soul,” he echoes softly. “It’s yours, now.”
Rumi opens her mouth, but no words escape her as she gapes at him. A tear cascades down her cheek.
“It’s mine to give, and yours to take, if you’ll have me.” His vision is blurring, and so he lets his eyes fall shut, allowing the darkness to encompass him. He forces himself to believe that the lull of sleep is accepted of his own volition.
His cheeks tingle. Rumi is holding onto his face. “No, no, no—” she grits out. Her voice is growing distant. “Stop. You can’t do this to me.” The words rush out of her in a frenzy, full of haste and distress. “Jinu.”
“Rumi,” he responds in a broken murmur. “Thank you.”
She was right. Gwi-Ma could be defeated.
He should have listened to her.
(Or: A fix-it/time-travel au where Jinu goes back to the very beginning of the story and sets things right.)
