Summary
12-year-old Shane Hollander hates the shopping trip they always do first thing when they arrive at the cottage every summer. He just doesn't get why they can't just bring all the stuff they need with them from Ottawa so he can get on with his vacation. But when this year's shopping trip ends with him meeting the very cool and mysterious Ilya Rozanov, the son of the new flower seller in town, well, he finds he doesn't mind it as much this year. He's hoping he's finally found the friend he's never quite been able to make. And if this friend has a smile that maybe makes his heart do little backflips sometimes, well that's just because Shane is excited to finally have a friend to make smile... right?
Or, what would happen if Irina chose another way to escape, brought Ilya to Canada, and he and Shane became childhood best friends? Without the rivalry, without the need to be enemies, would they figure out the rest?

There was glitter on the floor. It was from last week, Svetlana was pretty sure, when her auntie Carol (no relation) had hired a fake fireman to strip down to his gold lamé G-string in her mom’s hospice room. The guy was younger than Svetlana by a few years, with toned golden brown skin, an excellent sense of rhythm, and enough emotional intelligence (or acting skills) to seem completely unfazed by the prospect of shaking his glittery ass in a dying woman’s hospital room for an audience of half a dozen loud-ass post-menopausal women—plus one token white boy–hooting and hollering and clapping along to Whitney. Svetlana had hidden behind her cell phone camera recording the party from the doorway, experiencing all possible emotions and none at once. That was a good day. Ilya had even been able to cajole her mom into eating half a piece of sheet cake by flirting and nagging as only he could.
OR: Svetlana's mom just died. She's inherited one third of a beauty shop in Boston but her dream job is waiting for her in Ottawa. Her situationship is being too fucking nice. Shane won't let Sveta touch the funeral binder. And there are secrets hidden in boxes that could change how Sveta and Ilya understand their shared past.

The smirk slides off Rozanov’s face. “They want –” he swallows, bringing one arm up to drape over his eyes. “The team I play for. During lockout. They… disagree about rest of season. Tell me I stay.”
“But they can’t do that!”
Rozanov gives him a sardonic smirk.
When Rozanov’s Russian team doesn’t want to let him return to the MLH after the 2012-13 lockout, Shane finds himself pulled into a harebrained scheme to make sure his rival is safe – and it might just work. Now he only has to navigate a secret pretend relationship while also facing the condensed MLH season. But needs must, right?

Hayden never meant to find out that his best friend was in love with Ilya Rozanov, but when he did, he resolved to make sure Rozanov never broke Shane's heart. What followed were several years of slowly learning that maybe he'd been wrong about him.
Hayden never expected Ilya Rozanov to worm his way into his family. Or into his children's hearts. Or, reluctantly, into his own.
Times Ilya started to become Hayden's family, and one time Hayden realized he always would be.
