He simply could not do anything but cry in front of Crowley, waiting for yelling, a barrage of hate, something , from the demon to squash the remainder of his heart.

Genesis simply narrowed his eyes, almost assessing his friend, trying to find any reason to attack him. His right hand had fully grasped his blade now; his grip near bruising. It was rare to see Genesis contemplative; he was one to blurt the first thing that crossed his mind.
“I’m dying, Sephiroth. As is Angeal.”
Sephiroth felt his heart lurch at those words. He expected Genesis’ words to sting, not wrench him open.
“What?”
Genesis lowered his gaze, a frown washing over his lips. “Cell degradation. I don’t know much about it yet.”
“Is that why you left?”
“Yes.”

Summary
Stede’s words felt jumbled in his head, worries swirling behind his eyes. This was his confession. What if Ed rejected him? “Alright. Sonnet 47 is a-a love poem. It’s the eyes coming to terms with the agreement of the heart.” Stede hated how he stuttered, the nervousness in his voice betraying his words. He looked to the floor; he knew he was obvious. “I, too, have been struggling to get my eyes and heart to agree.”
“Mhm.” Ed reached and lifted Stede’s chin, feeling the divot of bone beneath his thumb pad just below his lips. Stede looked into Ed’s eyes with such anxiety. A thousand thoughts scrambled in his mind only to die on his tongue. Emotions other than grief and anger felt foreign to him, and if were only a few weeks ago, he wouldn’t believe himself worthy of such lightness. But now, here with Stede, he felt human.
“I have a wife and children, and I know that I’ve left them, but I still feel I should be loyal to them. I’m starting to have eyes for someone else.”
“And who is this person?”
Stede shallowed, the words budding and decaying on his tongue.
“You.”
