A canon-divergent, mythology-heavy slow burn. Dream's trauma. Nuala's agency. The long work of two people learning to let each other in.

The bloke in the back of this charming roadside diner is having a hard time of it, Hob is fairly sure.
Not that Hob is watching.
It’s just that the man was there when Hob came into this cliche masquerading as a restaurant and he was the only other patron. It was hard to miss him in all the white and red Americana decor. He was a human storm cloud, hunched into the last booth, facing the door, his head covered in a black knit cap and his shoulders draped in a slouchy black hoodie that looked deeply insufficient for the snow. His pale face was tipped down, staring into his coffee mug and now Hob’s done with his entire lunch and a piece of pie and the man hasn’t done much more than accept a refill, all without once looking up.
And okay. All right. So Hob has been watching him. Is still watching him.

Hob saw two things immediately, obvious as anything, in what he felt distantly sure must be the wrong order.
The stranger was surpassing handsome: tall as he was, but lean where Hob was broad, with pale skin, black hair as long as a maiden’s, eyes as sharp and bright as the bite of water in winter, and a mouth that made him think, suddenly and irrationally, of wild roses; and more was the pity for all of it, because the other thing, the thing Hob ought to have noticed first, was that he was staring at Hob like he meant to kill him.
In which Hob and Dream make poor first impressions, become fuck buddies, and, somewhere along the way, start trying to save one another. Out of friendship, of course. A love story.

What if Hob Gadling had saved his Stranger?
Well, this is a common trope. Yet a trope so easy to contribute to. However, this fan fiction is presented in comic format and dives right into the story.
Mind the tags as you dive in.
All line work, rendering and dialog had been done by yours truly, so it takes some time for me to post here. Single pages are located on my Tumblr if you are impatient, and completed chapters will come here.
This fan comic goes into dark places. Deals with dark things and isn't necessarily a happy story to start off. The original graphic novel touched on many, MANY subjects that were not spoken about publicly and still are taboo for some demographics.
This is a warning. It's not for everyone, but life itself isn't always pretty and perfect. I won't be offended if you decide that this isn't the story for you. It combines both the graphic novel and the Netflix series should you feel the need to find out more on some of the lore behind my story.
It gets tough before it gets better. I promise a rewarding experience in taking this journey with me.

Dream has struggled with personhood and living for a good while now. It only grows more acute as his son Orpheus languishes in hospital, minimally conscious, after a grave injury from an act of violence. Hob Gadling does his best to ignite a spark of hope within Dream.
(This fic plays somewhat with verb tense and dissociative narration qualities on occasion for storytelling purposes.)

Dream turns fully to look at him, eyes starshine and galaxies, and stops dead.
"Dream…" Hob says again, a little concerned at this point.

It's a square gem in an antique gold setting, real antique gold, with the sort of dullness to the metal that tells its age. There's nothing particularly ornate about it. The ruby itself is a simple cut – he’s not a jeweller, doesn’t know what to call it precisely, but it’s square-ish and bevelled at the edges – but it catches the light in such a way that it makes it seem like it has a thousand facets all across the surface of it. The rain creates a stippled effect, and even through two separate panes of glass Hob can see his reflection peering back at himself through the ruby’s deep face. £2500, says a placard set in front of it. Early 1900s RUBY pendant - real!!!
In 1989, drunk and heartsore and stumbling home from the soon-to-be-destroyed White Horse, Hob Gadling -- world's most loyal hound -- comes across a familiar-looking ruby in a pawn shop window.

Two years into his imprisonment, and Dream of the Endless has not given Roderick Burgess what he wants. Yet if he cannot have back his son, then he will have whatever else Dream has to give, and sell it to the highest bidder: body, powers, and all.
Hob Gadling, newly back from the Western Front, has barely slept since 1889, and is desperate for any sort of relief, even that peddled by mad old men claiming to be warlocks.
