Valjean does not ask, for he knows what Javert’s answer will be. Neither does he inform Javert of his intent, for it requires no leap of imagination to imagine the man’s reaction: his wild words, perhaps an attempt to throw something. And so it is that, when Valjean steps into the room with a heavy basin of steaming water held in his hands—he had asked his housekeeper to heat it, and yet knowing the nature of Javert’s complaints, had insisted on bearing it up himself—Javert raises his head from the sweat-stained pillows which have become his prison these past weeks, curls his lip in distaste, and says, “You presume too much.”

If he abandoned Javert here, he would be able to do more good – what was the life of one man who would as soon incarcerate a beggar than see him fed, weighed against the many souls that had come to depend on Madeleine?
In that moment, he felt the weight of his responsibility settle with great heaviness onto his already bent shoulders, until he felt that he would break, that certainly even his own strength was not enough to bear the weight of such a choice, that no man should be asked to make such a decision.
While travelling, a storm leaves Madeleine and Javert lost and cut off from all roads in a lonely valley in the Ardennes. But even more worrying than the need to find food and shelter is the fact that Javert is injured, and Madeleine, despite the secrets of his past, cannot leave when that might mean Javert’s death. When another accident forces Madeleine to choose between keeping his secrets and watching Javert die, or revealing himself as Jean Valjean to save Javert’s life, the already uncomfortable intimacy of being forced to rely on each other for survival becomes even more unbearable...

Summary
Shaken after learning he has wrongfully suspected the mayor, Javert rushes to the mairie to request his dismissal—but Madeleine isn't there. When the mayor returns two days later, it's with Cosette in tow, and Javert struggles to find an opportunity to speak with him.
Meanwhile, as Fantine recovers from her illness, Javert becomes convinced that Madeleine has fallen in love with her. If the mayor were to act on these feelings, it would be disastrous for his reputation. Javert is determined to save Madeleine from himself.
What he hasn't considered is that he may be wrong about who holds the mayor's heart—not to mention his own.
