Summary
The night sky is still. Silent. Just like a painting. The sky itself is as black as the paint he would use for a certain paladin’s hair, the stars like his freckles dotted so specifically throughout the canvas, twinkling so far away, like distant memories. The moon hangs at the centre, like a silver shield - guarding, protecting Will. A shield he would so often draw his own heart right over, giving it away to the boy who wielded it, as if it were the easiest thing in the world.
Or: New York, 1996. Will has built a life away from Hawkins - away from Mike. When Mike reaches out, wounds Will thought had long since healed reopen - forcing him to confront what he's been running from. Some things were never said. Some things never finished. Healing, it turns out, is not the same as forgetting.

"Now, I know you’ll resist," Mike blurts out, stepping toward him. "But I think this will be good. For both of us! For when we... you know,” Mike trails off, “When we get partners.”
Will scoffs, stepping closer to inspect the titles.

Summary
It’s the start of spring semester, sophomore year at Brown University, and Mike Wheeler has a trio of problems. His parents aren’t happy that he recently declared his study concentration as English Literature rather than something more sensible. His friends are all moving on with their own lives and it feels like everyone is leaving him behind, even Will despite the fact that he’s only five minutes down the road at RISD. And the fantasy manuscript that he’s writing has a romance subplot that just keeps falling flat and storylines that keep brushing a little too close to the reality of Mike’s life. Mike doesn’t want to press too deeply into the character dynamics between the main trio of characters in his novel, despite the fact that his professor keeps urging him to do so, afraid that if he does then he might have to face some truths about his feelings for his best friend that he’s been keeping buried deep in his subconscious.
