Set post-war. Even though the Americans won the war, everyone is reeling in their own way. Even John Simcoe can't deny his own pain. He saves Abraham from his own hand, but he wants more than anything to be a different person than he was in the war. He wants to be a living, breathing, loving, human being. The only problem is that he can't control who he loves, even if that person is someone who has a long and bloody history with.

I knew from the moment I first went to church that an afterlife never existed. I knew that Christianity, and all it claimed to be, was a lie made up to comfort those who were scared of death.
I knew that there would never be a god who willingly sent children, the purest lifeform, to suffer through starvation and abuse for the sin of being born.
And yet I still believed in it. I still believed that God existed. I believed that someone would send me to heaven and grant me years beyond my mortal life for doing good deeds and following a book made over 1000 years ago.
Once the blight infection started my life really never changed, but instead of fighting the British in Europe, I fought my own kind that had crawled out of hell.
What was once my enemy, became my friend. After we escaped San Sebastian my unit and a group of Englishman became teammates to fight the cannibals that had invaded our home. And that's when I saw him. Arthur, My childhood friend. After all these years, joining our respective armies, fighting through the dead, he was still alive. Did he even still remember me?

Summary
Matthew was sick of living in Alfred's shadow, his own twin brother who would forget he existed in a heartbeat. Matthew's whole life had been spent tucked away behind his warmly beloved brother, soaking up all the warmth so Matthew was left with nothing but bone-deep cold. No matter how hard he tried, he was never enough and never measured up. A lifetime of neglect had taken its toll and left him empty and bitter. When a child is abandoned by a village, he will burn it down just to feel the warmth. He knew it was wrong, but it felt so so good to chase the warmth. Once he started he couldn't stop. He was spiraling into chaos and with each escalation, he couldn't help but feel comfort in the terror he brought.
Or, Matthew unintentionally intentionally becomes a prolific serial killer, unintentionally intentionally disrupting the life of his twin brother and all his friends as he starts on a path of destruction.

Francis Crozier, historian of South Pole exploration and champion grouch, can't seem to find in his job description as assitant departmental chair where is says that, in the event their leader is incapacitated, it is his job to lead a bunch of professors with food poisoning out of the French Alps in the middle of January. But he'll do it, even if he's got the Beach Boys stuck in his head and he has to share a tent with James Fitzjames.
In other words, It's The Terror, but everyone's a fussy academic on the departmental camping trip from hell!

The American infantryman yelled a few curses at the musician before walking in, nursing his shoulder.
"Bien sûr, vous, de toutes les personnes," Ernest grumbled under his breath, slowly opening his surgeon's kit once more. He was reminded of the dull ache in his left eye—bruising, no doubt. He listened to the American's footsteps as he approached, aware of the eyes on him.
"You talking to me?" The golden-haired American asked, raising a suspicious eyebrow.
