The barn smells like shit.
Lambert glares at the frozen ground, the frost creeping over the dirt floor. The dirt is frozen, which means the shit on the dirt is frozen, which means winter is crawling closer, day by day. Which means heading north.
It also means that the boy who showed him to the barn to sleep in can't shovel the shit out of the barn because it's stuck fast. Hence the smell. A chicken chirrs from the rafters above, and fluffs itself up, nestling closer to its flock, roosted and tucked close for warmth.
Tucked close for warmth. There's a thought.

Summary
Set in the year 1906 in West Elizabeth, Kieran works as a stable hand while Sean continues down his gunslinging path. The two have an unlikely meeting, leading to them being a constant presence in each other’s lives.
