Summary
It starts like a bad joke: two doctors walk into a bar. The first orders a glass of iced water. The second orders two Long Island iced teas and tells her she's "boring and needs to loosen up".

Summary
She feels rather than sees Santos's fingertip skim the top of her left foot, the metatarsal bones. "Sorry," Santos says, as Garcia's eyes open to find hers. She looks a little guilty. "I was just— I forgot."
Garcia follows her gaze down to the silvery scar left by her first day mishap. "What, the little souvenir you gave me?"
Or: a quiet night in.

Summary
What Santos knows about Garcia: how she likes her coffee, the pattern of moles on her back, what sound she makes when she comes. What Santos doesn't know: her hobbies, if she has siblings, her parents' names. Santos hasn't met any of Garcia's friends. It's possible that none of them know of her existence. When Santos tries to imagine Garcia's place, she can see Garcia's black Hokas on the doormat, but she can't fill in any of the picture frames on the walls.
Or: Santos's turbulent love affair with the concept of Garcia's townhouse.

Summary
"Is it so hard to believe that I want to fuck you?"
It's crude, but it seems to work. Something about the lack of pretense, maybe. Garcia notes this down for future reference: Cassie Mckay, 43-year-old female, prefers to be propositioned simply and straightforwardly. When Mckay tilts her head, her bangs fall into her eyes a little. "I thought you liked them young."
Or: Mckay misses her date. Garcia helps out.

Summary
Javadi stands motionless on the doorstep. She's wearing this halter top that's soaked to the skin and a tiny denim skirt, beneath it miles of leg Mckay has to tear her guilty gaze from. Her rain-damp cheeks are streaked with the remnants of glittery makeup, but she isn't shivering, not even a little. There's a faraway look in her eyes that Mckay doesn't recognize.
"Victoria," Mckay repeats. "Talk to me. What's going on?"
"I think there's something wrong with me," Javadi says, the words spilling out of her like they hurt.
Or: it's midnight when Javadi turns up at Mckay's front door.

Summary
"Jesus, I get it, you think she's hot," Whitaker mutters. "But how exactly is she unavailable? She practically lives at our place."
"That's the problem," Santos grouses. "She's always at our place."
"I'm not following."
Santos gives him a look that is simultaneously miserable and condescending. "She's never brought me home, Whitaker."
Or: in which Dennis Whitaker fails to mind his own business.

"You want this to be about work," Bianca says, low in her throat. "It's not."

Summary
Bianca blows a piece of hair out of her eyes, looking unconvinced. "Anyway, Chris and I ended up rock-paper-scissoring to decide who'll have to wear dog ears. Best of three." She grins down at Vic, flicker of canine teeth. "He lost."
But how ironic— in this light, there's an almost wolfish quality to Bianca's smile. "I think you'd make a good dog," Vic idly says.
Or: Bianca's band dresses up as the Scooby Gang for Halloween.

“It’s a big change,” Bianca replies. The for us goes unsaid.
“It isn’t that big,” Vic hedges. Chooses their next words like weapons, a knife slipped cruelly between the ribs. “I mean, this will be his third divorce, right? And this time you’re all grown up, so—”
“Don’t,” Bianca warns, a serrated edge to her voice. A pause. “And you know what I mean, Vic.”
Or: on the car ride home, Vic and Bianca discuss the divorce.

“Turn around.”
They do, agonizingly slow. In the low light, their back is a mess of mangled flesh, open wound still seeping blood. She can see the dark outline of something moving beneath their skin, its edges pinned in place by the band of their bra.
Or: there's a wing growing from Vic's back. Bianca helps them get it out.
