Pacifica and Mabel weren’t even friends. They weren’t enemies anymore (and Mabel didn't want to be enemies, she hadn’t from the beginning), but they definitely weren’t friends. Sure, Pacifica didn’t glare at her from across the room at parties anymore, but it was still a surprise when the Mystery Shack doorbell rang, and Pacifica was standing on the other side of the door.
So it’s understandable, then, that the first words out of Mabel’s mouth when she saw Pacifica standing in a perfectly-tailored purple outfit with mud on her boots and leaves in her hair were, “Hey Pacifica! Are you here to steal magicky secrets from us again?”
(Set after the events of "Face It!" in the Gravity Falls Lost Legends book -- but no knowledge of Lost Legends is needed to understand what's going on.)

It wasn't an attack by another anomaly—they'd fought off their fair share of those.
It wasn't even any of the natural health problems you might expect in men of their age and histories—they'd headed off some of those issues, but were both surprisingly hale and hearty, on the whole.
No. This was something Ford hadn't even thought to fear.
"I'm thinkin' it's probably time for me to call it a day on this sailin' thing and go home," Stanley said. "We’ve both gotta find our own way in the world sooner or later, right?”

“I want to try,” Fiddleford says, gentle and windswept, “to be something good for you.”
Hope is a silly thing. It has burned Stan one too many times, and yet Stan keeps letting it, fool that he is. “Okay,” he agrees, and folds their hands together. It’s a clumsy fit: Stan’s fingers are thick and calloused, Fiddleford’s spindly and bitten at the nail. “Let’s try to be something good.”
Stan and Fiddleford try to be something good. It takes them thirty years. Companion piece to meltwater pulse, but can be read as a standalone.

Stan jerks away, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. “I’m not going to be second-best,” he growls, eyes dark. There’s a certain angry defiance in Stan that’s enrapturing, white-hot like wildfire. “I know I’m not as good as him, but I can’t—” His chest heaves. “I won’t do that to myself.”
Fiddleford reaches up, tracing the curve of his cheekbone. And it only takes his touch for Stan to fall apart again, to tremble like a newborn calf.

Today, Fiddleford held a needle and thread in his hands instead of a screwdriver. Sewing wasn’t exactly his wheelhouse— he liked to leave that up to Emma-May’s expert darning of Tate’s socks— but he had bought a few yards of a soft, crimson fabric, and he might as well put it to good use.
Cults needed a proper dress rule to be respectable, he had realized. And despite Fiddleford’s own love for patterned shirts and nice flannels, it wasn’t exactly the attire Fiddleford had envisioned for this type of work.
(Did he call it a cult? He meant society. It was a society.)
Or: It's Fiddleford's first year running the Society of the Blind Eye. He hadn't expected this much kidnapping. Or religious imagery. Or unified chanting in Latin. (Written for the McGucket Zine!)
