Summary
Famed treasure hunter and pilot, Aventurine, crash-lands on a deserted island. Injured and exhausted, he only survives the ordeal thanks to the aid of the island's only resident: an oddly eloquent sea monster calling himself 'Veritas'.

As a doctor, Ratio had always approached death clinically. He’d seen it peaceful, violent, and everything in between. But now that his own death is approaching, detachment seems impossible. He’d watched families cling to loved ones and seen how patients lingered in the presence of their friends. Ratio understands now why they couldn’t let go.
They reach the lake. If Aventurine’s hands tremble as they row, Ratio pretends it's from exertion.
What does death feel like? His answer to that question would be his greatest and final hypothesis.

Summary
Where is father? He has not abandoned us, has he? How could he? This is his home. Would he dare to do such a thing to his home? Millions of possibilities raced through the small snack’s mind. Father…is not mad at us, is he? His job makes him work very hard, but he always comes home at dinnertime and feeds us and lets us cuddle him and meow about our days to him. Surely he can’t have gotten sick of us already..? Surely, he doesn’t think we have failed to be good companions for him…has he?
Suddenly, the door swung open.

Summary
He'd already known that there was a possibility the professor shared his feelings. He recognized that the way Ratio treated him was vastly different from the way he treated others, but the longer time went on, the more Aventurine was able to convince himself that he didn't have a chance. He didn't want to have a chance. Because-
Because everyone he had ever loved had died, without exception. He does not have the means to protect them. His luck never extends to protect anyone he loves, only himself. It steals from anyone who is willing to care about him, care for him, love him more than themselves. So it was far easier to ignore the loneliness at the idea of losing his feelings of love if he thought he didn't have a shot to begin with. He only took gambles that put his own life at risk.
It's always the ones that tell him to live that end up being the most hypocritical, after all.
Where Aventurine develops Hanahaki, gets the surgery, and falls in love, over and over and over.
